This is a special link roundup to commemorate the hard-working students at The Orlando Sentinel High School Sports Reporting Institute. Zach and I both got our starts at the original Sports Reporting Institute in 2004. Since then, the Sentinel has selected area high school students to write stories and learn from Orlando Sentinel reporters.
It is a truly great experience and begins to teach high school students what the newspaper business is all about and how to become a successful reporter. When I was in the program, we covered events at the Wide World of Sports, including the AAU U17 basketball tournament (the 76ers' Louis Williams was one of the headliners at that event). Since then the programs has expanded to include the AirTran Pro Summer League at RDV Sportsplex.
Below you will find the articles those students wrote from the Summer League.
-Stanley Robinson had his ups and down while at Connecticut, including a time when he left the team and the school to support his two young daughters. Jonathan Lopez from DeLand High School details how that period made Robinson better prepared for the challenges ahead of him in the NBA.
-Jake Rakoci from Groveland South Lake High School writes about Patrick Ewing Jr. and his quest to reach the NBA. He certainly had his impressive moments for the Magic during the week-long summer league. Ewing is now playing for the Knicks in the Las Vegas Summer League.
-Utah's Gordon Hayward is out to prove nice guys don't finish last in the NBA writes David Ballard from Boone High School.
-Ana Cuello from Bishop Moore High School writes how Eric Maynor's NBA career was forged in the gym with his high school friend and AAU teammate.
-Latavious Williams made history on Draft night becoming the first player to be drafted from the D-League after not playing college basketball. Tyler Graddy from Lake Howell High School writes Williams' education continues on in Summer League.
-Justin Kane from Boone High School writes how Oklahoma City's Byron Mullens continues to grow and improve despite leaving Ohio State after his freshman year in 2009.
