When I was sitting at my computer getting ready to watch How I Met Your Mother, an odd comment came across my Twitter timeline. Like anyone who would hear the news -- whether before or after -- it was strange.
Stan Van Gundy is on Piers Morgan Tonight and he is talking about Pope Benedicting XVI's resignation? Is this real life?
It was not "shocking," so to speak. It was just... peculiar. The idea of Van Gundy seriously discussing and debating current events on a national news network against representatives from HuffPost Live and a social media brand consultant. The panel itself was an odd collection of personalities.
Stan Van Gundy held his own however and was a nice contributor to the conversation that made for an entertaining show.
So how did Van Gundy end up in such an unfamiliar locale? Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel spoke with Van Gundy about the appearance Tuesday:
'I wasn't going to let a lack of knowledge deter me!' Van Gundy joked in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel on Tuesday.
Late last week, Van Gundy's agent called and asked if he'd be interested in appearing on the show, and Van Gundy recalled answering, 'Sure, it sounds like fun.'
I guess it is that simple. When you have very little going on and you are known as an opinionated -- not to mention very observant and smart -- you get opportunities like this. Van Gundy has mostly kept himself busy with appearances on NBC Sports Network's college basketball coverage and NBC Sports Radio.
His one gaffe came when he accidentally referred to Chris Brown as Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston's husband, when the panel discussed Rihanna's on-again/off-again, sometimes allegedly abusive relationship. Despite the gaffe, Van Gundy probably made the most important point of the discussion.
I am curious what Stan thinks about the State of the Union Address. Hmm . . .
