Doron Lamb injured his right ankle the third practice of training camp. Since then, he has been relegated to rehab workouts, shooting free throws, watching practice and waiting to get through the injury protocols and back onto the court.
Lamb hopes that process will be complete by opening night Tuesday, although there might not be any guarantee Lamb will be ready to go by then.
"It's frustrating because I've been working hard this summer and working hard in training camp," Lamb said. "Things happen for a reason, I'm just trying to get back and help my teammates win games."
Lamb said his ankle is getting better and he continues to go through his rehab and work to get back into the lineup. However Lamb has not rejoined the team in practice yet.
There is some frustration, especially after Lamb put an impressive two-game showing at Summer League -- 11.3 points per game, 3 for 5 3-point shooting -- before bumping knees and missing the majority of the third game and the remaining two games -- that he suffered another random injury set back that has prevented him from contributing to the team on the court.
He has yet to take the court now in the preseason and has not practiced since the first week. There has been a lot of on-court time Lamb has missed during this crucial stage of the season. And don't forget, this was likely Lamb's first opportunity to compete for playing time in the rotation after playing in only 23 games for Milwaukee before the trade to Orlando.
Lamb said his injury occurred when he was driving right and simply fell over -- likely turning his ankle as he made a cut. Nobody was next to him, it just happened.
He has been able to do some lifting and he has kept his weight at a playing weight. He has done shooting drills and ankle balances to try and strengthen the muscles. He has participated in a few of the conditioning drills with the team but he will still need to get back into playing shape when he is ready to return. After all, he has missed the majority of training camp.
Lamb is working hard and still hopes to play Tuesday night when the season opens in Indianapolis.
"I'm trying to play the first game of the season, but we'll see how it goes."
