About an hour after the Magic's preseason ended with a 101-82 loss to the Pelicans, the Magic announced they had waived second round pick Romero Osby and training camp invitees Mickell Gladness, Manny Harris and Kris Joseph. The Magic decided to sign training camp invitee Solomon Jones.
That move was a bit of a surprise. Osby, after all, was a player the Magic surprisingly took in the second round because of his work ethic and determination on the court. It seemed like the Magic would try to find a roster spot for him.
It was obviously not to be. Osby played mostly at small forward which was a bit out of position for him. He averaged 5.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in 15.4 minutes per game. He shot 45.5 percent from the floor. It was clear that he could play and compete in the NBA. His position just remained so unclear. And he could not adjust.
Osby was a victim of a number's game at power forward that is filled with talented players the Magic want to see play.
It did not help that Solomon Jones really ewnt out and won the position with his play in preseason games -- and more likely in practice.
Jones averaged 4.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game during the preseason. Those stats look worse than Osby's, but Jones was a solid defender and seemed to fit the Magic's offense better. Again, it seemed like Osby was playing out of position most of the time.
Whatever the final reasoning was, this is the direction the Magic will move.
Manny Harris, Kris Joseph and Mickell Gladness rarely played. It was no surprise the Magic opted to release them.
In other news, the Magic will pick up the team options on Tobias Harris, Nikola Vucevic, Andrew Nicholson and Maurice Harkless, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports. This move was largely expected as the players progress through their rookie contracts.
Vucevic and Harris are eligible to become restricted free agents following the 2015 season. The Magic will be able to pick up the fourth-year option on Harkless and Nicholson next summer. They had until Oct. 31 to make these moves.
