Stan Van Gundy is known for his candid press conferences, where you never quite know what he’s going to say. After Sunday night's 100-98 loss to the Sixers, you knew exactly what was coming.
He sternly sat down, and before anybody had a chance to even turn on their tape recorders, began… “Obviously, a very disappointing game. To have that kind of lead and let it go… We put up no resistance whatsoever defensively, we didn’t run back, we made defensive mistakes in terms of game plan coverage and they picked us apart.”
When a reporter asked Van Gundy about Courtney Lee’s 18-point breakout showing, Van Gundy was having none of it.
“If you’re looking for me to lather praise on anybody, you’re barking up the wrong tree,” said Van Gundy. “We’ve gotta play a lot better and look at the things that we did wrong. We have to play harder. They were just running by us. We didn’t seem to have any sense of urgency getting back.”
He went on to lament the Magic’s focus and intensity on defense.
The Magic deserved it. They gave up an 18-point lead before allowing Andre Iguodala to hit an 18-foot fadeaway jumper to win it. And they allowed Donyell Marshall - Philadelphia's version of Brian Cook - to scored 11 points in the decisive fourth quarter, when the Sixers outscored the Magic 35-19.
“Our effort has to be a little bit better, especially on the defensive end,” said Dwight Howard, who posted 31 points and 16 rebounds. “We had three good days of practice, and we came out here tonight and our defensive intensity as a whole wasn’t there. There were a lot of plays that gave Philadelphia momentum tonight.
