Courtney Lee was the breakout performer on Wednesday night with a playoff career-high 24 points, but there was another Magic guard who made a pretty big difference himself: the one the players call “Dad.”
Backup point guard Anthony Johnson, 34, played the entire fourth quarter for the Magic, anchoring a strong defensive showing and hitting a couple of key shots down the stretch.
Stan Van Gundy went with Johnson over starter Rafer Alston because he thought Johnson “was playing pretty well.”
“I think he can match up better with Andre Miller,” Van Gundy said. “And that way we have Lee on Lou Williams. Tonight I’d rather have those matchups than have to put Lee on Miller and Alston on Lou Williams.”
Johnson ended up playing 25 minutes, while Alston played 22 minutes.
“It’s the playoffs,” Johnson said. “If you don’t have the energy to play big minutes during this time of the season, then you probably need to be home.”
Johnson, who finished with 11 points, was able to take advantage of a Sixers defense that was leaving him wide open. The Sixers almost always double-teamed with Johnson’s man.
He scored four points and grabbed a few rebounds in the final quarter.
“They’re basically trying to make the point guards and shooting guards beat them,” Johnson said. “With that being said, you gotta make your shots whether they’re guarding you or not. We gotta be aggressive, we gotta make plays, even if your jumpers is not falling.”
We’ll have a complete recap and more later on.
