Orlando Magic suffer historic collapse, fall to Boston Celtics

05/12/09 | by Zach McCann [mail] | Categories: Recaps

If you called this the most devastating loss in Orlando Magic history, I wouldn’t argue with you. If the Magic lose one of the next two games, this meltdown will go down with Nick Anderson’s missed free throws, Shaq’s departure and Fran Vazquez as some of the worst memories in the history of this franchise.

The loss was unacceptable, from everyone involved — that includes players AND coaches. With your team up by 10 points in the final minutes of a crucial Game 5, how can you completely abandon everything that’s been working all game? The Magic went scoreless on eight consecutive possessions, at a time when just ONE basket probably puts the game away. I understand Dwight Howard can’t figure out Kendrick Perkins in the post, but he deserves to be completely ignored? Rashard Lewis was consistently scoring in the first half by attacking the hoop, so the Magic use him as a spot-up shooter down the home stretch? And how many times can we run a Hedo Turkoglu pick-and-roll to the right with everyone else standing around?

The Magic played stall-ball, slowing down their offense and hoping there wasn’t enough time for Boston to come back. Now, tell me — when has this plan ever worked? That’s how teams squander leads; they stop playing the way that built their lead to begin with. The Magic got scared, and I think we saw that these guys aren’t ready for the big-time yet.

Let’s take a look at Orlando’s eight possessions from 5:43 until the Celtics started fouling at the end.

  • Rafer Alston missed 3-pointer
  • Rashard Lewis missed jump shot
  • Rashard Lewis missed 3-pointer
  • Rashard Lewis missed turnover
  • Rashard Lewis missed 3-pointer
  • Hedo Turkoglu missed jump shot
  • Rafer Alston turnover
  • Rafer Alston missed 3-pointer
  • Missed jump shot. Missed jump shot. No attacking. No aggressiveness. No Dwight Howard. In fact, the Magic’s most aggressive play was when Alston drove down the left side of the lane and threw the ball about 20 feet in the air in the direction of the rim, hoping Howard would come down with it. Howard’s good, but there were four Celtics converging on the ball.

Stan Van Gundy was a constant target after the game, and deservedly so. Text messages and facebook posts were constantly degrading Van Gundy for tonight’s debacle — and Dwight Howard got in on the action in the post-game press conference.

“The coaches have to recognize what’s working on the floor,” Howard said. “Stick to it. Even if it’s half your starters on the floor. Not just the guys you have put the most trust in. You have to have trust in everybody.”

Howard added: “When you have a dominant player, let him be dominant.”

While going to Howard in the post has proven futile for pretty much the entire series, Howard has a point. Howard is your star player, and you have to ride with him — especially with the offense as stagnant as it was.

But that’s not all that you could question Van Gundy. Here are my concerns:

    1. Leaving Courtney Lee out of the game until the final minute. Instead of playing Lee during crunch-time, Van Gundy went with JJ Redick, who didn’t see the ball on offense and allowed Ray Allen to hit the go-ahead and back-breaking 3-pointer with 1:20 to play. I’m not blaming Redick for allowing the shot, but it’s worth mentioning that Orlando’s best perimeter player was sitting on the bench.

    2. Not scoring out of timeouts. With 3:56 left in the fourth quarter, the Magic called a timeout as the Celtics had cut the lead to 85-79. Coming out of the break, Rashard Lewis turned the ball over and the steal led to a Paul Pierce lay-up. That was really the best they could do coming out of a timeout?

    3. Inability to get the ball to a shooter. When the Magic were inbounding the ball with 6 seconds left, down by three, they inbounded the ball into Dwight Howard, who got immediately fouled by Glen Davis. So, needing three points, we can’t find a way to get the ball to anyone but the team’s worst free-throw shooter? You knew they were going to insta-foul when Howard got the ball.

    4. Not sticking to what's worked in the past. At the end of Game 4, the Magic were able to mount a comeback by taking Rafer Alston out of the lineup and having Hedo Turkoglu play point forward. With the game slowing down anyways, the Lee-Pietrus-Turkoglu-Lewis-Howard lineup was adequate on offense and deadly on defense. Did we see that lineup tonight? Not for a minute. No, the Magic went with JJ Redick and Alston at the two guard spots. Who needs defense when you’re protecting a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter?

Now, I’m not trying to blame Van Gundy for the loss. The players deserve a lot of the blame — they allowed the Celtics to score 33 fourth-quarter points, including on 13 of their final 15 possessions. And the offense was struggling because of the players’ play, as well.

These are issues that Van Gundy has to think about. And, going forward, we must ask — is this Magic team really capable of playing with the big boys? We know they can do it in the regular season and in short spurts, but on the big stage they have whimpered away twice in a row now. It’s certainly cause for concern. And with one more loss, we’ll have all summer long to think about it.

"That was the most pathetic coaching performance I have ever seen"

That was my text to Zach after I finished the game (I watch them on DVR). From a professional coach, that is absolutely the worst I have ever seen.

Rashard Lewis had 17pts, all but one of the came from inside of 15ft, all but one of those came from off the glass. He was getting to the rim at will, and what do we do in the late 3rd qtr and 4th qtr?

Hedo at pt and run pick & roll and get no where.

Absolutely pathetic job by SVG. I have been one of his biggest fans but this was pathetic. How do you go away from what got you there? How? I really wish I could find his phone # and ask him. Instead, he is looking at the refs for fouls, come on Stan you are in BOS in the playoffs you are not gonna get help from them.

Then we have C-Lee sitting. I understand Stan's point about wanting C-Lee fresh when House comes in, and that's fine. Start with that, its been working, but when its crunch time in the 4th qtr, JJ should be watching from the sidelines. And don't even get me started on AJ playing in the 4th qtr.

I'm proposing C-Lee, Pietrus, Hedo, Rashard, Dwight w/ Hedo running the pt. I think that is gonna be our best bet down the stretch to compete with BOS.

We are so much better than this BOS team its pathetic. We should have won the series tonight (given we beat them in Game 4). Instead, we are down 3-2 and should we win game 6, we have a ridiculous task of winning game 7 in BOSTON.

With all of my anger and disappointment aside, there is one positive we can take from this. We are better than this team and should have won 2 games in BOS, so this gives me some hope that we can win in BOS Game 7. It's sad really how badly we outplayed and have a Loss to show for it. I honestly think we might blow them out on Thursday and then have this kind of game on Saturday and finally break through.

I know my prediction was Magic in 6 or BOS in 7, but right now I think this team can win in BOS game 7.

Yeah, it's really hard when your team is clearly better than who they're lining up against, yet they're losing a best-of-seven series. The Celtics have two advantages over the Magic (given the health situations of both teams): they play harder and they play smarter. That's it. And they're up 3-2 because they're doing both of those to such a greater extent than the Magic that all of their other advantages have been nullified.

This series should be 4-1 and over by now, with the Magic having 3 blowout wins. I've never felt bad about being a Magic fan, never. But this playoff season has really made this post-Jameer team my least favorite Magic team in the past 15 years besides the 21-win team that really had nothing going for it.

Why was Howard in the game with 6 seconds left? He's a great shot blocker and rebounder, but those are useless skills in that situation. It was clear that Boston would foul in that situation, putting Magic on the line with no chance to tie. So, the only play that made sense was a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer. They needed 5 shooters on the floor! Bad game management, especially coming out of a timeout!

I'm a Magic fan and Dwight is right!! FEED THE BIG DOG AND HE WILL GUARD YOUR HOUSE!! I couldn't fathom Howard's lackluster defense and rebounding( if he and the rest of the Magic are ever ordered to box out...it's falling on deaf ears), untill i went back over the stats and watched the 4th quarter again...painfully and saw as usual Van Gundy froze Howard completely out of the offense using him primarily as a high pick and roll screener. Of course when you have those pick and rolls being conducted by "Never Met An Ugly Shot He Didn't Like" Turkoglu and "All of A Sudden I'm A 3pt Shooter Not a Point Guard" Alston, Howard will never get the ball back. Now either Van Gundy doesn't know how to coach a supremely athletic 6'11, 270 freak of nature, or the players are completely tuning him out . Either way he needs to be gone...and this coming from one of his biggests supporters initially. Van Gundy's entire gameplan defies logic!! Boston only have 2 1/2 bigs (Perkins is 1, Baby is 1, Scalabrine and Moore count 1/2). Why is God's name would do ANYTHING other than feed you MONSTER ALL-STAR center all nightlong pounding against the 2 1/2 bigs as well as having your 2 6'10 forwards spend their entire nights driving the lane and posting up??? I almost puked when i saw Lewis drive a nearly wide-open lane an come within 5 feet of the basket only to kick it back out to Alston so he could jack up another missed 3!!! Orlando is clearly the more athletic and talented team. SVG NEEDS TO GO!!

First, I am as disappointed as every Magic Fan out there. I am disappointed that the Magic ever let the Celtics draw a breath in Orlando. The Celtics should have left O town down 3-1.

The effort last night was disappointing because they had their foot on the Celtics' neck and let them up.

Having said that I am particularly troubled by the threen blind mice masquerading as refs. They gave the Celtics at least 5 points last night and probably as many as 8. In games that are close a team should not have to overcome the other team and the refs as well.

That 24 second violation that wasn't is an abslolute travesty to fair play. What the hell are they looking at? Giving Allen a bonus point for almost being behind the three point line and calling phntom fouls against the Magic and not calling the same plays when the play is reversed is rediculous.

I hope the Magic can dig deep and show that they are up to the task of overcoming both the Celtics and the Three Blind Mice.

All the talk is on how the Celtics are missing KG, but the bottom line is this: if we have Jameer, we don't lose this game. We don't lose game one of the Philly series, and we don't let the C's fire back in game one of this one. This team doesn't have anyone who knows how to play basketball down the stretch of games other than Jameer. That includes our coach. Up by 11 points with under 6 minutes to go? Feed your freaking First-Team All NBA Center for God's sake. At the worst, you'll at least likely come away with 1-of-2 from the line, which is a hell of a lot better than throwing the ball around the arc and taking yet another stupid contested 3-pointer.

As a Nebraska fan, I have gotten used to losing. I was like Zach, and had gotten to the point where it was "just a game." But these last two have been some of my most painful sports memories since the epic Colorado ass-whipping of 2001. I'm almost to the point to where I just want to see the more deserving team in Boston move on and not have to watch these Jameer-less Magic ever again.

I keep seeing Magic fans say they are so much better than the Celtics...really? And blaming the refs is weak. They gave orlando 2 points on the howard travel in the first half. Orlando is who we thought they were...a soft team that lives and dies by the 3.

With KG out, I think Orlando is more talented than Boston. Brian Scalabrine is playing meaningful minutes for God's sake. But that certainly doesn't mean Orlando is a better team. In fact, Boston has been the much better team in this series.

We have outplayed them in every single game except Game 2, how can you not say we are the better team?

If it wasn't for such poor 4th quarter coaching this series would be over 4-1.

And the live and die by a 3 is such a misconception its laughable. We hardly hit any 3's last night and we were up 14. Stop with that awful theory, do some research before you make statements.

Better team only matters if you can finish the game. That's why the Celtics have been the better team this series. Chalk it up to coaching or experience or whatever, but the Celtics have been the better team because they finish games.

The Magic are the more talented team, but they certainly haven't been the better team. Boston has outcoached Orlando severely (rough when you consider Rivers is an Orlando reject), they've played with more desire than the Magic (inexcusable), and they've got the experience and clutch factor on their side (and the refs, but bad calls or not, we are deserving to be down 3-2. We probably deserve to be done in 5, but we were blessed in game one).

Tomorrow night will be the Magic's 26th postseason game in the past three years. I really hope they play like they've learned something about playoff basketball in the 25 games they've had.

As a Celtics fan, I think this 'blame game' you guys seem to play is pretty bogus. I mean, the Magic are the better team? How so? We finished with the better record. We have superior starters at 3 of the 5 positions. We have the proven ability to claw back and win games. We're the defending champions. How is it that you consider yourselves the superior team? And I don't say that to rile you guys up or start a trash-talking argument. I just think you guys underestimate the Celtics. No-one on your team in games 4 or 5 had anything resembling a killer instinct (apologies to Courtney Lee in game 4 only). Rashard looks scared as the clock hits 2 minutes to go. Hedo is in fifth gear already (if he's on, he's definitely on... if he's not, he's a solid player). Even your much heralded big man, for all the love he receives defensively, can't figure out how to play Perkins on the offensive end.

I agree, Van Gundy coached a horrible stretch of basketball. But at some point you have to accept that the Celtics played ridiculously good defense. They denied any entry pass to Dwight (which Rafer appeared reluctant to make anyway), spread the floor on offense and wouldn't allow Rashard any time to make the right decisions with the ball.

End of the day, as a Celtics fan I'm confident of getting the win in Orlando purely from a psychological standpoint... have we broken the Magic will to fight?

And just to emphasise that point... if I'm questioning whether or not your team has given up the fight, then perhaps the Magic don't have the mettle to win a championship just yet. We know the Celtics have fight in them. The Cavs haven't even been tested so we can't know. But the Magic? Not so sure anymore...

Isn't it nice to be able to say that complaining about the refs is weak when you are getting the benefit of the calls.

The Celtics wouldn't even be here if it weren't for the refs handing them game five of the Chicago series. Rondo comitted a flagrant foul and should have been suspended for the next game. He should have been thrown out of the next game for throwing Hinrich into the scorer's table.

It is magnanimous to say that it is weak when the refs are in the tank for you.

Tell me of any other team that has gotten the benefit of the whistle as much as the Celtics have.
