Magic were outmatched in the Finals, but that was one amazing season

At this point, I don’t feel any sense of disappointment, frustration or regret. How can you? The Lakers easily mulled through the Magic to capture their 15th championship, and they did so in dominating fashion.

There’s not a person in the world who can say the Magic are better than the Lakers. And when you can say that, losing hurts a lot less.

The sting especially softens when your team didn’t fail because of dumb turnovers, poor coaching or lack of effort. None of that was the problem. The Lakers were simply better than the Magic.

If the Magic are a heavyweight, the Lakers are a super heavyweight. The Magic simply couldn’t trade punches with the Lakers, who are too good, too deep and too versatile. They’re built with the ability to counter anything the Magic could throw at them. And they’re killers — when they see blood, they attack.

The Magic’s only hope was to shoot 62 percent like they did in their only win of this series. That wasn’t happening tonight.

Toward the end of the second quarter, as the Lakers completed a 16-0 run that wiped out a hot Magic start, it was clear. The players, coaches, and fans of both teams knew it was only a matter of time till this thing was over.

The 5 percent of the arena wearing purple and gold began to sound a lot louder. Each Magic basket was greeted with half-hearted cheers. It was beginning to sink in. The Lakers were going to win the NBA championship on Orlando’s home floor.

“Were they the better team in this series? Yeah, that’s why they’re the champs,” Dwight Howard said. “They didn’t take any possessions off. They kept the pressure on us, and like I said, they played like a team that was hungry for a championship.”

Unfortunately the Magic couldn’t stand up to the talented and composed Lakers. The Magic dropped a few threes in the fourth quarter to keep it respectable, but the players accepted the loss at different points in the second half.

After the game, Howard and Jameer Nelson sat on the bench and watched the Lakers’ victory celebration.

“What I just told Jameer is to look at it, just see how they’re celebrating,” Howard said. “It should motivate us to want to get in the gym, want to get better; just to see those guys celebrating.”

To reach championship caliber, the Magic will certainly need to improve — whether that means by roster moves or another year of development is unclear. We’ll get into that throughout the coming months. For now, let’s concentrate on the 2008-09 Magic.

Excuse me for being expected and cliché, but it’s totally true: don’t let this loss take away from what the Magic accomplished this season. They gave their fans an incredible ride, albeit a bumpy one, on the way to Orlando’s most memorable season in team history.

When Nelson suffered his shoulder injury, the season was lost. Magic fans were already looking toward next year. Can you believe the Magic just played in the NBA Finals?

The city rallied around its basketball team like it NEVER has before. We saw the team’s franchise player become a national icon and improve so much on the defensive end that he was rewarded with the league’s highest defensive honor. We saw a 23-year-old unknown rookie from Western Kentucky blossom into a playoff contributor. We saw a coach get under people’s skin yet always keep us entertained. We saw this team overcome multiple suspensions to starting players. We saw this team beat two 60-win teams and reach the biggest stage in basketball. We saw a team unlike few other teams in history — a blend of sweet outside shooting, top-notch defense and the best rebounder in the league.

I was able to attend every Magic home game of the playoffs, and I can’t even begin to recap all of the memories. There are too many. From Andre Iguodala’s game-winning jumper in the first round to Kobe’s improbable double-clutch lay-up tonight, these playoffs were riveting and gut-wrenching and always compelling.

We’ll wrap the season up throughout the next few weeks. For now, think about what this Magic team has done. They’ve accomplished things nobody ever thought possible from this crew. And I know that sounds like something a player would say, but it’s true.

This Magic team deserves to be applauded. I know the team was upset tonight, but whether it’s tomorrow, next week or next month, they’ll be proud of what they accomplished and look back on this season with a lot of positive feelings.

Big Laker fan here, who wanted to stop by and give major respect to a great Magic team. I'm particularly impressed by Howard wanting to stay and watch the Laker celebration as motivation going forward. Great attitude and this is a player and team I know is going to be a pleasure to watch for years to come.

Looked to me like the Lakers simply had the ability t okeep their cool under pressure, given how close the Magic came to winning several times. The Lakers went through the same things themselves several years ago.

This series reminded me of the Pistons series from last year. The Magic were a lot closer than the 4-1 game total would suggest, but in the end couldn't seize opportunities they were given to try to compensate for the fact the other team was better.

The Magic were given a chance to steal a game in LA, and they couldn't capitalize. LA certainly took advantage of stealing a game they shouldn't have won. That's as much of a factor in this Finals as the talent level.

I'm proud of what they did, although it doesn't seem fitting for them to just fall so flat in the last 54 minutes of the season. I really did not expect LA to be celebrating on our home court, and I couldn't sit through watching it like Dwight and Jameer. Hopefully with a healthy Jameer and Dwight getting a chance to work on his game all summer (instead of scrimmaging with Team USA) the Magic will take this experience and come back strong like LA. Wondering if Hedo will be back is the biggest question. I don't think he'd be as good on any other team, but it's very possible he'll take a lot more money to see if my theory is wrong.

I say hats off to the Lakers and we'll see what happens next season if Orlando has a healthy starting 5 and Pietrus off the the bench. Go Magic!!! Who thought they'd get to the Finals without Jameer? I know I doubted it. And I'm glad i was wrong! Can't wait for 09-10 season!!!

Great job Magic! You have nothing to be ashamed of. After all, you have to be good to get to the finals. Remain the gentleman that you are...we're so proud of you. Thanks for a wonderful season...see you next year.

An incredible season for the Magic, and a great series. With Dwight Howard as the anchor, the sky is the limit for this club.

another laker fan here to congratulate-and commiserate. every other team would have given their eye-teeth to have had a season like the magic, especially losing nelson.
sadly for svg and the team nelson was just fit enough to play, so svg had to play him, causing dislocation and subpar pg play. and dh frankly wasn't used to the size that surrounded him for 48 min (ok twice for 53)
he is a great talent still in development.
in a year or two, with ewing's coaching i shudder to think how good he'll be.
finally 4-1 flattered the lakers. yes games 1 and 5 were easy, but a stroke of luck here, a ft there and it's 3-2 magic going back to l a.
never forget, you beat two great teams to get to the final and be proud. sadly, you're probably going to have to beat those same two next year!

wth, i sincerely believe that the magic "did" have a chance, they lost 2 of their games going to overtime, that means that they were only 1 point from victory. I agree that the Lakers are a good team but nothing that the Magic couldnt handle if it werent for bad turnovers and a few missed freethrows. The Magic don't need to be sympathized with, we made some bad decisions and some bad plays or missed opportunities and it bit us in the butt, i hope they learn from all this and come back to rock the Lakers next year.

I wrote a little something on the Magic loss, check out www.yovia.com/blogs/timlara

Im not buying the Lakers were a better team. They were just a better team when it counted. The Magic should of won game 2 and 4 but missed easy opportunities. That is why the Lakers are champions not because they were such a better team. They are however a very good team, that you can not let have the type of opportuinities we gave them to get back in to games. They deserve their title but we will be back. Great year Magic we have much to look forward to next year. We know we're a contender now.

I'd like to echo the post of the blog author and some of the comments here. Just as the Lakers had a season to be proud of the year before, the Magic have a 2008-09 season to be proud of. It's all about using your Finals experience to drive you toward a title the next season. Both teams suffered heartbreaking Game Four losses in their respective years of losing in the Finals. Both series, the Laker 2008 Finals loss in six games and the Magic 2009 loss in five games, were closer than the final result seemed to indicate. I reveled in last season's WCF victory over the Spurs, and would have felt terrible if my team hadn't made the Finals. Magic fans should keep that feeling of defeating the Craboliers in the ECF with them until next season begins.

The Lakers won the Championship fair and square but let's not forget what could have been.
Orlando could easily have been playing for the title Sunday night instead of L.A.
As Howard said, the Magic couldn't match the Lakers' consistency throughout possessions in the series. Had Orlando been more consistent, who knows, maybe they would have won in five games.
However, the Lakers earned it.
Looking to next year, I doubt Orlando will be back.
Why?
Assume K.G. is 100% healthy and if he is the Celtics are the East's best team. Next, LeBron & Co. should be as good and even hungrier. However, the East is only a three-team Conference right now. And don't forget Philly and Chicago, two up-and-coming teams who can pose a threat.
The Magic have many decisions to make but the biggest move will be to keep Hedo. Jameer should be 100% next year. Howard will only get better and so will Rashard, however, Lewis may already have reached the peak of his talent, but who knows.
Yes, a GREAT season and an unexpected ride to the Finals gave this 15 year Magic fan memories of 1995. And at least we won one game. The loss hurts because we had good chances to win this series. Last, do not think this is a glimpse of next year. I remember after 1995, it was a question of “How many times will Orlando be back?” and “How many titles will we end up winning?” Of course, the answer was another 14 years with 0 titles. Who would have believed that at the time?
So Magic fans, enjoy this season because nothing in sports, as in life, is guaranteed. We would win it all next year or we could lose in a re-match of the ECF to the Cavs or against the Celtics, who knows?!

We're definitely never guaranteed anything, especially with how competitive the East (especially the Southeast Division) is becoming, but I do believe we're the favorites.

I highly doubt KG will ever be 100% again, and the C's are reportedly looking to deal Ray Allen for a top 5 pick. Besides, with a healthy Jameer I believe we're still the favorites to beat the C's (provided we re-sign Turk). I believe we're 2-2 the past two seasons against them with fully healthy teams, and with them not getting any younger I don't really see them becoming a tougher out for us.

The Cavs, meanwhile, could get lethal, but if they do this Shaq trade they'll just get worse. The last thing they need to do is get slower, and it's not like Shaq has any shot of stopping Dwight Howard deep in the playoffs anyways. I know they won't get Boozer because of the past issues with him and the organization, so they may be another year away. They'll try the Shaq thing though I'd imagine, and with Delonte getting better and LeBron being LeBron, who knows I suppose. I still don't see them beating us in a series if that's the only "upgrade" they make.

Chicago could be scary, especially if they get Chris Bosh in 2010. Philly, on the other hand, I doubt makes any big strides. I love Iggy, but if they get rid of Andre Miller, I don't see how they'll be any better next season. I guess Raymond Felton wouldn't be a bad acquisition for them, but I don't see them getting much better than the 6-seed again next season. Miami should get better, though, and Atlanta will still be strong.

And just for the record, I think the Bobcats make a good run next year and give us a tough series in the first round.

It's hard to say whether we should keep Hedo or not. On one hand he was an important part of our offense but that was because he was given that role by SVG. If we don't keep him we could lose a big part of our offense and team chemistry. There were times when Turk was the only player who seemed to have any confidence. The question is if we do keep him will we be able to get better or will we have peaked out because we won't be able to bring anyone else in. We will essentially be the exact same team that lost in the Finals of course some of our young players will be more experienced. In the end what killed us was a lack of size inside against the lakers. We might need a strong power foward who can get offensive rebounds and make 10-15 ft jumpers especially since Gortat is going to leave us. Hedo is a play maker and I really like his big goofy Turkish ass but he will basically lock us into this same team for the next five years. The salary cap will eliminate our ability to grow. The only way we will get better is if Howard, Lee, Nelson, Pietrus raise their game to a new level, which is entirely possible because all of them are pretty young guys who should get better. In the end I think we should probably pay Turk because at least we know where we stand. If we lose him we could end up where we have been since our last finals which is in obscurity
