How much is Hedo Turkoglu really worth?

06/18/09 | by Zach McCann [mail] | Categories: Players, Analysis

Hedo Turkoglu declined his $7.3 million dollar option for this season, so it’s safe to assume he wants considerably more than that in a new contract. His agent insinuated they’re looking for at least $10 million in a long-term deal. Is Turkoglu, at 30 years old, really going to get that much?

Here are ten comparable players to Hedo Turkoglu and their salaries this season (and by the way, Turk’s PER this season was lower than all of these guys). To the Magic, Turk’s value falls somewhere toward the top of this list because of his importance to Orlando’s system and his established bond with Orlando’s key players.

Richard Jefferson: $13,200,000
Gerald Wallace: $9,500,000
Tayshaun Prince: $9,500,000
Josh Howard: $9,945,000
Mike Miller: $9,028,575
Corey Maggette: $8,275,862
Ron Artest: $7,400,000
Stephen Jackson: $7,140,000
Shane Battier: $6,448,900
John Salmons: $6,077,151
Trevor Ariza: $3,100,000 (contract year)

The average among these 10 players is about $9 million, which seems like a fair number for Turkoglu. If the Magic can keep the contract at four years — $36 million over that span seems good — then the Magic should pull the trigger.

But to other teams, is Turkoglu really worth close to eight figures? John Hollinger’s Player Efficiency Rating isn’t perfect, but it’s probably the best method we have of comparing players. Turkoglu’s PER this season was less than Travis Outlaw, Marvin Williams, Grant Hill, Rudy Gay, Anthony Randolph and Richard Jefferson. And PER often punishes player who are shut-down defenders — something Turkoglu is not.

We all know the intangibles of Hedo Turkoglu — his ball-handling skills, his abilities to create mismatches, his knack for shooting well in the clutch — are why he’s so valuable to the Orlando Magic. But it can’t be ignored how much Turkoglu fell off from last season to this season.

2007-08: 19.5 points, 5.0 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 45.6 FG%, 40.0 3P%
2008-09: 16.8 points, 4.9 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 41.3 FG%, 35.6 3P%

It’s not like 30-year-old players regularly bounce back after down years. It’s hard to imagine the Magic, or any team, think Turkoglu’s career year of 2007-08 is the norm. The Turkoglu we saw this season is likely what most people expect out of Turkoglu going forward. Is 16-5-5 with a poor shooting percentage worth $10 million?

I’m not saying the Magic shouldn’t sign Turkoglu. Like I said, for $36 million over four years I’d sign him on June 30. And I’ve been a longtime supporter of re-signing Turk, who I believe is underappreciated by the hometown fans.

But there are a lot of reasons why the Magic wouldn’t be out of their minds to let some other team cough up big money for Turkoglu.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with this. Orlando’s best five-man unit this postseason was Alston-Lee-Pietrus-Lewis-Howard. That's right - Orlando’s starting lineup sans Turkoglu was the team’s most efficient unit. And all three of Orlando’s five-man units with negative production featured Turkoglu.

These stats are in no way definite or proving, but they’re worth mentioning. Is Turkoglu worth it?

10 figures? Surely you meant 8 figures, since 10 figures means he would be getting paid $1 Billion which no basketball player is worth IMO at least.

I honestly believe Turk is worth $10 mil a season, but I think that would only be good for a couple years. The problem with that is he will want a 4th year so we are gonna be stuck paying him $10m a year for 4yrs when in his last two years he won't be worth that much money.

This team is built on creating mismatches for the opponent and losing Hedo would move Rashard back to the 3 spot and then the traditional SF could guard him.

This team w/o Hedo will be more of a traditional team and may not be in the top 3 in the NBA IMO.

He never said anything about 10 figures. What article did you get that information from? I read this "But to other teams, is Turkoglu really worth close to eight figures?" I have to agree with this article.

My biggest fear is some mediocre team throwing money at him, thinking he would be as important to them as Hedo is to the Magic's playstyle. Fortunately the economic situation for most teams should curtail that a lot. But if Detroit is as interested as some say (even though they have Tayshaun Prince), the Magic might be in trouble. Hopefully the money difference isn't enough to convince Hedo that staying in a better team situation isn't worth sacrificing the millions.

I think Hedo should get what he is making this year but restructure it for a few more years. Lets be honest, the Magic shouldn't break the bank for a player with 2 good years left. Hedo can choose familarity, decent money, a town who loves him, and chances to win championships for the rest of his career or he can choose a big contract.

Remember, we are not the Boston Celtics.

No way he stays for $7.4 million or whatever he was set to make. I really don't know why though. What the hell is an extra $4 million when you're that rich?

And is it too ridiculous to dream of a sign-and-trade including Battie with Toronto for Chris Bosh? Perhaps. But if it does happen, I hope I have a spare set of shorts ready to go.

I agree with this article 100%, If its true that upper management is willing to go into the luxury tax. Wouldnt it make more basketball sense to let Hedo sign some overpaid contract elsewhere and then try and move Rafer Alstons and Tony Batties expiring deals for maybe some draft picks or developing players (think amir johnson from detroit), and then try and sign a Millsap, Boozer, Marion, Artest. Or do a Sign and trade for Prince, Jefferson, Randolph(clippers want to move him bad) Antwan Jamison, all these guys have been rumored of being available in some way. I like Hedo but I would hate for the magic to be stuck with a declining player whose contract would be impossible to move. And not getting back to the finals because of the improving eastern conference.
06/19/09 @ 08:45
Comment from: Jeffs [Visitor]
If the Magic upper management becomes drunk with one season then we will be stuck with an Allan Houston type contract for Hedo Turkoglu.

Dwight is only 23!!! We can't screw up his prime by over paying somebody now.
06/19/09 @ 08:55
Comment from: Billy [Visitor]
I would only approve of a Zach Randolph trade if the Clippers gave him away along with $5 million in cash and the first pick of the draft. That guy has talent, but is an absolute headcase.

I don't know if I have much faith in the Magic making a nice, solid trade. The Alston trade is the first one they've made in forever that actually worked out. And even then, it's putting us in a difficult situation for next year.

I don't think any kind of trade and sign is gonna happen. But keeping turk for 4 more years for 10+ a year isn't smart. But I'm not sure if there's a player in the FA market they can afford that can be plugged in and make this team what it is with Turk, in the post season. That's one very important thing people are forgetting, during the beginning of the season, Turk wasn't as big of a part of the Magic's success as he was last season. Jameer stepped up and took all the big shots and was just playing awesome, all-star basketball. I think with Jameer, Rashard and Dwight, they have enough star power, C Lee and Pietrus are great role players when they're healthy, JJ even played well against certain match-ups this year. I think signing a few more role players would favor the Magic more, a big guy that can rebound, such as Paul Milsap from Utah for about 4-5 mil, another solid shooter that can hit open three's, like A Parker outta Toronto for about 4 mil. I'm not sure who else is available the Magic could afford, and of course you never know what other teams will offer guys like these, so it's all up in the air. However, my point is, let Turk go if he wants more than 8.5 a year, and get some role players to help out Dwight, Rashard, and Jameer.

who said battie for bosh hahaha that is the most ridiculous trade ever, don't get me wrong i'd love to have bosh, but why would toronto trade him for battie in their right minds?

Comment from: jstrouse05 [Member] Email
Re-sign Turk to a 4 year 9.5 or 10 mil deal, trade him, battie and a 1st round pick for Bosh... Toronto gets a 1st round pick and a solid 3, Bosh isn't going to resign next season they need to get something for him.

Sterling,

I was saying a sign-and-trade with Hedo including Battie for Bosh. I know it's extremely far-fetched and will never happen, but I can dream.

Would never be stupid enough to post Battie for Bosh straight up.

Hollinger's ratings system is full of shit. He's a pompous moron who thinks that stats dictate EVERYTHING. Do you really think that ANY of those players could aptly replace Turk?

TUrkoglu is the type of player who can go 1 for 15, yet still be the most important Magic player on the floor. Did you notice how the Magic completely fell apart in th 3rd quarter of game 4 when Turk left the game?

Also, TUrk's game is not based on athleticism and he has not logged that many minutes in his pro career, I don't think that the aging process will be that bad for him.

i agree with john.
name one player that can able to score, assist,to play as a pg when needed, stand against most phsical and dominant players like lebron and kobe. kobe has these skills but any other ? orlando played great bball in past playoffs but imagine without hedo how could it be ? most of the balls ended up in howards hands with great d on him or unstable shoots by lewis and alston while hedo was out.hedos game matured with himself. i still remember that he missed a free throw on purpose than tipped with power slam to win a game back in turkey.believe me he is much more effective now. i he will return san antonio guys like you dont deserve his play..

From these replies, I get the feeling that Hedo is overvalued a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love having Hedo on the team and he's a very dynamic offensive player that teams have to gameplan around, but acting like he's better than our 4th-best player on a fully-healthy squad is naive. There's a reason three of our guys made the All Star team this year and Hedo wasn't one of them. I'm hoping we can find some way to keep him around, but I'm leaning toward us not having to spend $10+ million to keep him in tow. Hopefully he'll see the opportunity he has to win a title here and expand on his game, as not a lot of NBA coaches outside of Stan Van Gundy will let him play his style of basketball.

just compare him and lewis not just the numbers wise also basketball IQ , clutchness and ability to lead the team when the ball is too hot late of the games and ask dwight who he wants to play with more. i hope he goes somewhere else maybe to detroit or portland cause he doesnt deserve all this

He is not a player with his athleticism, so IMO he will be performing better for the next 5 years compare to his last five years. I have been following him since he was playing in Turkey for Efes Pilsen. He can play any position and he is very conservative at using the ball, don't rush the ball when you don't need to, control the game. These are the things he can do and will do at any team that he goes. He is not there because of his shooting skills or his defense he is there because of his basketball IQ and you cannot evaluate it with the numbers, for that reason IMO he's worth to be paid $10 million a year for 4 years!

I like Turk but the turnovers are scary. He
made alot of last second shots but, we
shouldn't have to go through the season
depending on last second shots. If we stop
turning the ball over, we could have more
points on the score table. I would offer
4years/38million or find a caliber player
same as turk with less turnovers. Maybe
a sign and trade deal or 2 for 1

We simply don't know how it feels to play against him. have you heard cleveland and lakers players' comments about turk. they were afraid of only 2 players on magic team: howard and hedo. I think orlando shoud trade nelson. he commits too many turnovers and he is not a true point guard. I just don't want to depend on a player who just shoots. Hedo contributes to the game in so many ways. he controls the magic's game.
06/26/09 @ 23:45
Comment from: Jimbo [Visitor]
Hedo will probably get 10 mil or close to it. One sticking point is that he might say yes to less if he can get a 5 year deal and the Magics ain't gonna give him that. I think some team will. Hedo said he'd consider staying in Orlando for less money ("I got good stuff going here") but in the next breath added "but I'm not stupid." people are saying with the Carter trade he's gone but I'm not 100% sure. Close. But not 100%. If I'm the Magic, I would have paid him 40 mil for 4 years and i think he'll get that and let Carter rot up at Exit 14 W or wherever-haven't been in NJ for a few years.

what if jameer dont get better than what he was in the finals?
what if Vince Carter(33 years old)wont be able to play 40+ minutes like Hedo does?
what if Rashad cant make the 3 points?
Everybody is loooking at Hedos numbers and saying that he aint worth 10mil:)
he gave up his numbers this year for his team.
He never had easy shots unlike Rashad and others.he was always double-teamed.he was double-teamed more than anybody in the team even more than D.Howard.
i think that he is the BEST small forward in the nba....
