Magic in talks to acquire Vince Carter from Nets

06/25/09 | by Woody Wommack [mail] | Categories: News, Rumors

UPDATE: The trade is official, according to the Star-Ledger.

Two NBA sources have told Orlando Magic Daily that the Magic are in talks with the New Jersey Nets to acquire Vince Carter.

The sources said the move would primarily be a salary dump for the Nets, who would acquire the expiring contracts of Tony Battie and Rafer Alston.

ESPN.com's Chad Ford is reporting that the deal would also include fan-favorite Courtney Lee going to the Nets and New Jersey's 2009 first round pick Ryan Anderson (a power forward) coming to the Magic.

This would be quite the deal for the Magic, who have expressed interest in Carter multiple times in the past.

It would be tough to see Courtney Lee go, but Anderson is a good young player that would fit very nicely into Stan Van Gundy's offensive game plan.

We'll provide more details as they become available.

What do you think? If you were Otis Smith would you pull the trigger on this deal?

What are the odds that Courtney has a better season than Vince next year? I'd say not good, but not out of the question. No doubt who will be the better play in 2 years... Lee can shoot and defend and Vince can... throw up a lot of shots?

I have never been a huge fan of Carter. He reminds of T-Mac in more ways than one (and it's not just because they are cousins).

No doubt, he would improve the offense. He is a 20-point a night guy still. But the thing that worries me most is his defense and effort on that end of the floor. That is where the Magic took the big step last year. Would bringing in Carter be a step back? It might be.

I really like Courtney Lee and really hope we would not include him in any deal. This might help the Magic it might not. It seems very reactionary to me after what Cleveland did last night.

I would rather see Orlando try to bring back Turk first before going to this type of a move.

It's sad to see Courtney Lee go, especially after the Magic have missed on so many draft picks.

But man, a starting lineup of Jameer-Vince-Turk-Lewis-Howard is making me drool.

Philip, your defensive comment certainly has merit. But Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis were considered huge defensive liabilities before Stan Van Gundy. Now they're part of the league's best defense. Getting effort on defense hasn't been a problem for SVG.

This is serious?

I'm pretty indifferent right now. Not sure how Vince would work in that lineup zach. It looks good on paper but I'm not sure there will be much togetherness but I guess we will see.

C-Lee had so much friggin potential, I hate to see him go.

Should offer JJ instead of Courtney. It's so hard to find above avg perimeter defenders.

Not to fond of the trade.

Can we afford Vince & Hedo?

Pretty crazy that zach, jeffs, and myself were talking about how Vince always wanted to play in Orlando and looks like he got his wish.

I still don't know what to think on this trade. The next step is re-signing Hedo I guess b/c if that doesn't happen I'm not sure how this all works out.

I learned my lesson from last off season by criticizing Otis so I think I'll let this take some time.

Like every other Orlando Magic fan, I don't want to see Courtney Lee go, but I do like this trade.

What is not being mentioned is the addition of Ryan Anderson. Ryan Anderson is a STEAL!!!! The guy started about half of his games for the Nets and is only 21 years old. He can play, he is young, and at 6'10 you get a legitimate power forward to add depth.

My first reaction to this trade is "hell no". After thinking about it for awhile, my reaction is, "terrible idea."

Vince Carter and T-Mac share more than just being related. In my opinion, they're both naturally gifted athletes but incredible underachievers. And we saw what happened with T-Mac on the team.

I don't see how the addition of VC and keeping Turk would work, which would mean that Turk is getting the boot. To me, Turk seems like the guy that keeps the Magic ticking.

And I don't like the Magic trading away Courtney Lee. I think he has the potential to turn into a very good player.

Jeffs said it best, nobody is glad to see C Lee go but look at what were gettin Vince fricken Carter and Ryan Anderson, who was drafted one slot ahead of C Lee in last years draft.

And we also probably give up Hedo.

So we trade C-Lee, Alston, Battie, don't resign Hedo for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson.

I dont really care for that deal.

Hedo opted out, everybody wants to talk about Vince not playing D but suddenly think Hedo is the Turkish Bruce Bowen!
06/25/09 @ 15:43
Comment from: afallingbomb28 [Member] Email
I'm not worried about the D aspect of either play b/c neither are great defenders and once you get past VC/Hedo we have DH so that's alright.

Hedo was opting out and probably gonna resign for more money which is a smart move. Now we have basically taken that option away and told him, "We found your replacement now go sign somewhere else."

The only argument against resigning Hedo was that early in the year Jameer ran the team and Hedo was not counted on, so if we return to that then we should be fine but who knows if that happens.

Haven't the Magic been down this road a few times before? They've dealt with T-Mac and Steve Francis (me-first, one-dimensional scorers) before, that didn't work out too well. Why trade a guy like Courtney Lee after the year he had?
06/25/09 @ 16:17
Comment from: Dwipin [Visitor]
when i first saw the trade, i was pretty upset, but after thinking about it, i dont mind it all that much.

i understand everybody's concerns, believe me, i felt and thought the same way. but after thinking about it, has VC ever played for a contender for the title? i know its a weak argument but im just thinking that if a person is put onto a contender, they will put more effort into helping that team get over that hump. thats just my opinion. but like many of you, im very sad to see courtney lee go.

I think the magic knew all along hedo was leaving they just didn't say anything because they wanted to see if the carter deal was going through so I don't think they had any intentions on signing turk so I think the trade was a bad deal.
06/25/09 @ 17:16
Comment from: gerik grant [Visitor]
I don't think that getting VC means that Turk is gone. I actually think this means we HAVE to re-sign Turk.

We just traded away all of our depth.
06/25/09 @ 17:31
Comment from: Janonny [Visitor]
I have to agree. I think letting C-Lee go is a gamble but it is definitely a situation where now pushing into luxury tax to keep Hedo seems more justified.

I don't think its really a reactionary move and honestly I think putting some more depth at PF behind Lewis is a good thing. I think the bigger question now is with Battie gone and Gortat likely to be gone as well, especially now with the big contracts coming in, what do the line ups look like with Dwight resting?
06/25/09 @ 18:08
Comment from: Kenny D [Visitor]
I personally would have liked to tested the waters and try and get Chris Bosh. But there went that fantasy.

One thing I'll say, this is not a long term solution, which I think everyone knows. This is to win a ring next year. Which you gotta do if you have that window.

Comment from: David Delgado [Visitor]
The trade is solid, the magic get a legit 4 man that they have needed. Hedo has said he wants to stay a magic, and Otis is willing to pay the luxary to keep him. You guys are forgetting about Mickael Pietrus, arguably their best perimeter defender who by the way showed up in the playoffs.

Bad DEAL!!!!!

1) Has vince carter evern won!!!!!!!!
2) THe magic offense is largely predicated on turkoglu's driving and passing ability. Will VC be tossing up alley oops to D-Howard?? NO! Will VC be kicking out to 3 point shooters? NO!
3) THe Magic just let go of Turkoglu AND C-Lee for a fucking loser!!!!!!11

I'm still indifferent on it as well. Being a lifelong Magic fan, I expected that we would eventually get rid of Courtney Lee, because that's just what the Magic do (Shaq, Big Ben, Chauncey, Mike Miller, Ariza, etc.) when they have guys with All Star potential. I just didn't expect it to happen this soon, after such a great rookie season. I stand by the statement that Lee has no significant weaknesses in his game, except for maybe his assertiveness, and his nose.

It's a good deal for the short term, but I hate it for the future. I LOVE that we got Anderson, though. Dude's a perfect fit for our system. Now, I'd honestly rather sign Ron Artest than Hedo. Carter is a solid secondary distributor, and we need to replace the defense that we lost with Lee.

I think its an incredible deal. People forget Vince is very mature now and avged 5 assists last season, that will likely grow now. And the Magic can start MP at 3 and be better defensively overall. Vince Carter is still a WAY better player than Hedo at relatively same ages in life, while Vince is on books for 2 more seasons (4rd team opt.), a new Hedo deal would have seen him 34-35-ish prolly declining in the 4th,5th season of a backloaded contract. Vince just had his best season in the last 2 or 3, and will be super motivated to play however way necessary to win the title. He is a go to scorer for when the Magic mysteriously and infamously forget what is offense in a basketball game, VC can get that shot up and make it alot. He will create an drive easier with Dwight down low too! I cant wait to see VC highlight shooting and dunks with the Magic home jerseys, I may buy one haha. Oh, and wow, Ryan Anderson too! Another 6-10 3pnt threat who rebounds good. That deftly seals the deal.

im not gonna lie...im a bit disapointed, i loved courtney lee he had alot of upside. i wasnt happy when i first heard of the trade but the more i have thought about it the more otis smith is looking like a genious.

a couple weeks ago a was taken back that the magic came out and said they were going to pay luxury tax in order to keep hedo which gives him free range to opt out and demand big money, but what this trade does is not tell turk to take a hike...it tells him to not be greedy and resign for a great chance at a championship for a descent sallary. the first thing that showed me this is the magic didnt go out and get a SF(which is turks positions) they got a SG. second the magic already offered turk a contract which he turned down but they are still in negotiations.the most the magic can offer turk now is prob between 9-10 million and thats going into the luxury tax.

i dont think hedo would mind making 9 million a year to play on a team that he has been on for 5 years and consists of a starting line-up of nelson, carter, turkoglu, lewis and howard which made it to the NBA finals the previous year with a team that wasnt as good.

last thing i love lee, he will be a phenominal player within 4 years and i wish him luck in jersey but he was not a factor in the finals when we needed him. unfortunately he will be good and not in a magic uniform very similar to trevor ariza which was another trade i was disapointed in.

if we manage to keep turkoglu great trade if we dont i think it was a mistake.

This is a great trade for the Magic. Carter is the best passing shooting guard next to dwyane wade. I'm pretty sure that we will make this team more cohesive, because of his mentality which is making the right play at the right time. It could be abusing his defender or passing out of double teams. Advice for carter doubters: watch his game and don't listen to the negative comments because usually they were from toronto fans that got blown out of proportion. Great trade.

I dont think this isnt great trade for the magic..
Add: vince Carter,ryan anderson
Out:C-Lee, Alston, Battie, don't resign Hedo..
Im pretty sure it could be difference if magic had vince instead of C-lee in play offs but how couldnt you see how orlando arrived to finals! boston, cleveland and the most important game(4thgame) against phi.. all teams had same problem..they didnt have answer hedo&lewis...
next year if orl wont resing hedo( they wont I guess) orlando will be a good team but never get championship ring maybe you orlando fans try to believe but also Im sorry about that as a magic fun :(

Wow,
I would just like to say that, after seeing Vince play most of his Toronto days and almost ALL of his Nets days you guys obviously have NO idea what type of player and person this guy is. First off he is probably the most unselfish superstar there is and will undoubtedly make DH an even bigger force. Face it, Vince never played for a contender and last season he let Devin Harris shine and was a GREAT leader for the Nets team.
He is nothing like his cousin, he's missed like 11 games in the last 4 years. He's also one of the best clutch player in the league, and even if he is not known for his defense, when he tries, he can play at both ends of the floor. I have seen great improvements over the years at that end of the floor from VC.
Not to mention that he is almost guaranteed a great game + a game winner in toronto every year :).
Honestly, DW, VC and Lewis, not to mention Nelson make for a very very scary team, no matter who you throw in with them.
Anyways, Im happy for the guy, he is a class act and has contributed HUGE amounts of money and time to the area.
GO MAGIC. AND GO VC!
