Ryan Anderson: anything but a throw-in

06/26/09 | by Woody Wommack [mail] | Categories: News, Analysis

Who is Ryan Anderson? That's the question most Magic fans are asking almost 24 hours after the team acquired Vince Carter in a blockbuster deal that sent shock waves through the city.

Orlando fans know what they're getting in Carter - and it's safe to say that opinions are varied - but most of the Magic faithful can't believe the team gave up promising rookie Courtney Lee.

Well, I've got news for you. If the Nets hadn't taken Anderson one spot ahead of Lee in the 2008 NBA Draft, Anderson would have been Orlando's selection.

"Adding another young piece in Ryan Anderson, that was huge for us to be able to cross that barrier," Magic General Manager Otis Smith said about giving up Lee. "Those guys went 21 and 22 right in front and behind of each other and we liked him in that draft as well and we were just able to pick him up a year later."

As a notorious Pac-10 homer and native of the West Coast, I've seen plenty of Anderson and I can tell you that he's more than just a throw-in to make this deal work.

"Giving up a young Courtney Lee only made sense for us because we were getting back a young Ryan Anderson who we think also has some promising future in this league,” Smith said.

At 6-foot-10, Anderson is an immediate upgrade at backup power forward over Tony Battie. His numbers as a rookie (7.4 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game) nearly eclipse Battie's career numbers (6.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg).

Lee was a solid defender and will probably develop into a nice player, but his skills are duplicated by Carter and Mickael Pietrus. Anderson will add a scoring punch to Magic bench as a big man that can shoot, rebound and occasionally block shots.

A look at Anderson's stats from his sophomore season at Cal in 2007-08 really tell the story. During the season Anderson led the Pac-10 in scoring, putting up 21.1 ppg while averaging 9.9 rpg.

Some of the other top players in the conference during the 2007-08 season? O.J. Mayo, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Brook Lopez and Jerryd Bayless. All players that went in the top 11 picks of last year's draft.

Anderson can also step out and shoot the three, hitting 69-of-189 (36.5 percent) as a rookie. His numbers from beyond-the-arc as a power forward nearly equal that of Lee (82-of-203, 40.4 percent), a shooting guard.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said Anderson's importance to the deal shouldn't be overlooked.

"I think another part of this deal with Ryan Anderson was crucial." Van Gundy said Thursday. "...When Rashard came out of the game and we went to the bench, we really had to play a different way because we then could not spread the floor out. And when we tried to move Rashard back to the three, you couldn’t stretch the floor with your four, so he couldn’t get any room and now you get another guy that can really stretch the floor, and I think it gives us even more flexibility to both swing Rashard back to the three or when Rashard is back on the bench getting a rest, which he didn’t get much of, we can play the same way."

While it's sad to see Lee go, Magic fans should praise the team's management for being aggressive and trying to capitalize on the championship window while it's open. We all remembered what happened in the mid-90's, and in the current state of the NBA I think the Magic front office is smart to strike while the iron is hot.

Well not that the Magic have their big 4, Jameer, Carter, Lewis and Dwight, who do they go after now? They only have an 8 man roster, I'm assuming they'll want to keep Pietrus coming off the bench where he was the 6th man of the post season, JJ and Ryan Anderson as well will be mainly bench contibutors. So who is going to be their 5th guy? I know Turk is 99% gone, I've heard rumors of a possible Rasheed Wallace deal, any truth to this? Who else is out there the Magic could possible sign? And what other role players can they fill their roster with?

Grant Hill owes us a favor and already lives in Orlando plus we will need depth at the small forward spot if Turk leaves. Hill can still produce and can be very effective for 15 to 20 min. We can give him the same low salary that the suns gave him. Plus Vazquez might be a possibility i believe his contract is over now and he said last year he was ready to come over and play. Sign a couple of prospects from the summer league to help with depth and will have the perfect mix of veteran leaders and young energy players

We need to resign Gortat and then get another PF/C and a SF. Not sure who those could be.

I do not want Rasheed though. If anyone is a cancer it's probably him, I just don't like his attitude. I know he is a great player but I just don't want that attitude on the team.

It should also be noted, not sure if it was in another post, that Otis said this trade took awhile b/c of C-Lee. He said he really didn't want to let that one go so the trade stalled for awhile while he debated letting him go.

point blank: it wasnt a good move.
courtney lee was no-doubt a good player for the magic, and for them to jus let him go so abruptly in his first year going pro really hurts. yes he has made a few mistakes but he is young&&this is all new...he is going to show all of you!you all traded him&&skip to my lou for some washed up player who didnt even make it anywhere near as far as you all this year....van gundy is stupid.

I don't see them resigning Gortat, he wants big minutes and I don't think he'll get that in Orlando, and we all know C Lee was great for the Magic this year, but he was far from perfect and from everything I've read and researched, Ryan Anderson will be as good if not better for the Magic. He will be a perfect back up for Rashard. Pietrus is a solid 6th man for Carter as well as who ever they get as the new 3. I wouldn't mind seein Grant Hill fill that role and have Pietrus start. Or what about Ariza, he's a FA, is he askin for too much money? Has SVG and Otis already burned that bridge, or would he be willing to sign with Orlando and be a solid starting 3? With his defensive capabilies and new ability to knock down the 3 ball, he'd be the perfect fit!

Picking up Ariza as a free agent? Are you drunk?

Gortat is gone not because of money but because playing time.

Courtney Lee was able to excel because he was a solid player on a very good team in a free flowing offense. Don't think he did it all by himself. Good not great.

VC is a major upgrade over Hedo. Magic will find a decent wing player back up because a veteran will want to win a championship. The Magic will use the remaining money to find a solid C to back up Dwight. Nice trade, Magic!

Look at it this way...Orlando gave up their sixth best player for New Jersey's best. Lee had a bright future and I love everything that he did for the team this past year, but at 24, how how was his ceiling? I was always a little concerned about his potential but we'll see what happens.

As far as adding another big and/or bringing back Gortat, I think the team's odds at retaining Gortat took a HUGE boost today when the Knicks acquired Darko. New York were looking at a big and Gortat was an option for them. This is one less team (with steep pockets) to overpay Gortat. The Magic will bring him back for $5 million at the most (I think) so I think the team has a nice shot at bringing him back.

Right now, the depth chart looks like this

Nelson/Johnson
Carter/Redick
Pietrus
Lewis/Anderson
Howard

Assuming they bring back Gortat, that puts the team at nine players.

With that in mind, there are a few options. The team can hope for a sign and trade with Turk to Detroit for Tayshaun Prince or Portland for a Travis Outlaw/Steve Blake type of deal...bringing in a guy like McDyess for the vet minimum solidifies the team's depth up front too. In an ideal offseason, here is what the lineup could look like.

Nelson/Blake/Johnson
Carter/Redick(might be gone in trade)
Outlaw/Pietrus
Lewis/Anderson/McDyess
Howard/Gortat

That's a solid 12-man roster and the thing is, it's not too much of a reach.

I had no idea Orlando had intentions on signing Anderson if the Nets hadn't picked him right before Lee. I like the Carter deal if they can bring Turk back, then they can slide Lewis to the 4 and play wide open on offense. They would creat even more matchup problems for every team in the East, if Carter is replacing Turk then your losing your 4th quarter go to guy and replacing him with Vince Carter. I do like the depth Anderson bring to their frontcourt though. Good move, it's a deal they couldn't turn down.

With all the discussion that Turkgolu is gone, is there any possibilty that the Magic go with a more traditional lineup? Would they go with Howard - C, Anderson PF, move Lewis back to his natural position at SF and then pur Carter at SG and Nelson at PG. Anderson averaged 12 PPG and 5 RPG over the last 5 games in 16 minuntes a game. That would translate to about 15-16 PPG and 8 RPG if he was playing full time.

Correction, Mis-typed 16 minutes - Anderson averaged 26 minutes a game over the last 5

I think Vince will be a much better option in the clutch than Turkgolu. Turk was good, don't get me wrong but he's not a 20 points/night guy and he's no Kobe Bryant. Vince is not quite Kobe either but he's closer than Turk.

I like the idea of getting more bigs (especially a Rasheed at 4) and let Rashard play the 3. He's much more effective and 3 and Rasheed can stretch the floor just as effectively at 4.

WE NEED GORTAT BACK! Courtney was promising (I would have rather seen J.J. go) and I don't think the Magic can afford Turk at this point. Good moves for the Magic last week. I smell a title coming on.
