Examining Orlando's needs and the free-agent market

06/29/09 | by Zach McCann [mail] | Categories: Analysis

We’ve got two days till the start of the free-agency period, where the Magic are sure to be active. They only have eight players under contract at this point, with two major contributors — Hedo Turkoglu and Marcin Gortat — on their way out of town.

Don’t expect the Magic to go on a spending spree for a high-priced free agent, though. The Magic only have $5-10 million to play with, meaning they’ll have to go bargain shopping to fill several key needs.

Here’s a look at the team’s three biggest needs and some free agents the Magic could pursue at each position.

  • QUALITY BIG MAN

Because Dwight Howard battles foul trouble so often and the Magic play with an unconventional lineup that’s undersized at power forward, finding a quality big man should be priority No. 1 heading into July. It’s not set in stone, but I think Gortat is gone — he wants to start and play full-time minutes, not spend his prime years backing up Howard. That’s the most important thing to Gortat, I believe. So the Magic need a big man, and there are plenty of them out there. This might be the spot where Orlando spends their mid-level exception and gives up some real change. Let’s take a look.

Rasheed Wallace: Apparently Wallace told TNT’s David Aldridge that he’d like to sign with the Spurs or the Magic (that’s not confirmed), and the Magic are expected to make an offer. I’m sure the opinions will be incredibly mixed on putting Rasheed in a Magic uniform, but I love it. He’s tough, he can defend, he can shoot, and he’s been absolutely killing the Magic for almost the entire decade. The Rasheed Wallace situation will be a very interesting one.

Brandon Bass: Like Wallace, the Magic are expected to already be talking with Bass’ people. Bass has been talked about quite a bit the past couple years, often with the idea that he’d start at power forward and Lewis would shift to small forward. While that’s not going to happen, Bass could be a reliable backup to Howard. Bass can rebound well, and he has nice hands around the hoop. And he’s only 24.

Antonio McDyess: Another hard-nosed Detroit big man who has been giving Orlando fits for a long time, McDyess is an unselfish, tough player who would make a fantastic backup to Howard. He could come a little bit cheaper than the two guys mentioned above, as well.

Zaza Pachulia: Who can forget Zaza? He was a fan-favorite in Orlando as a rookie in 2003-04, pulling down rebounds and oozing of charisma. He eventually signed on with Atlanta, starting occasionally and contributing on the boards and on defense. If the Magic can’t sign Wallace, Bass or McDyess, Pachulia would be an OK parting gift.

Don’t even think about: Carlos Boozer, Paul Millsap, Lamar Odom, Drew Gooden, David Lee, Anderson Varejao, Charlie Villanueva, Mehmet Okur

After the jump, we'll take a look at the Magic's two other primary needs.

    Follow up:

  • WING PLAYER

Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus, JJ Redick. That’s what the Magic have on the wing at this point. Rashard Lewis and Ryan Anderson can slide down for spurts, but the Magic would like to keep those two at the 4 most of the time. The Magic need a player who can come off the bench and give the Magic some quality minutes.

Grant Hill: It sounds ridiculous, and it’s unknown how soured Hill’s relationship is with Magic management, but there’s no doubt Hill would be a fantastic option coming off the bench. He’ll likely sign for the veteran’s minimum, and talent-wise he’s about the best Orlando can hope for.

Matt Barnes: Here’s a guy who could fit into Orlando’s system with his ability to run the floor and hit open 3s. He’s a little bit like Pietrus, except he’s not a very good defender. So I guess he isn’t that much like Pietrus.

Ime Udoka: At 32, he’d be anything but a long-term option. But he’s a nice defender who has been a pretty decent outside shooter in the past. Ideally, Udoka would like to sign with the Spurs, who just traded for Richard Jefferson and let go of Bruce Bowen, Udoka’s primary minutes-stealer.

Rodney Carney: If he’s cheap enough, Carney could be a nice addition to the Magic. He’s a player who hasn’t quite found the right situation yet.

Hedo Turkoglu: He’s 95 percent gone, but you never know. Maybe the Magic will dip waaaay into the luxury tax to complete the best starting five in the NBA. It’d be shocking, though.

Don’t even think about: Shawn Marion, Ron Artest, Trevor Ariza, Ben Gordon, Anthony Parker, Desmond Mason, Marvin Williams

  • RESERVE POINT GUARD

Anthony Johnson received a lot of grief last season, but the man was a solid backup point guard. He played defense, he protected the ball, and he knew his role — that’s all you can ask for out of a point guard who backs up an all-star. That said, the Magic can’t go into another season depending on a 35-year-old Johnson to be their first guard off the bench. Last season was the first time Johnson played more than 40 games since 2005-06. It’s imperative the Magic find a serviceable point guard to play behind Jameer Nelson. Orlando’s price range for this spot will likely be the veteran’s minimum.

Marcus Williams: Coming out off Connecticut in 2007, Williams showed a lot of potential and flashes of brilliance in his first season with New Jersey. At only 23, Williams is still young enough to improve.

Mike Wilks: He’s played for eight teams in six seasons (seriously, is that a record?), and was Orlando’s third point guard last season before suffering an injury.

Flip Murray: The 29-year-old probably played himself into a bigger contract (and out of Orlando’s price range) with a nice showing in the playoffs.

Tyronn Lue: He’s a great locker room guy — I’ve seen him crack up Dwight Howard several times — and he’s someone who would know his role and fit in with the team. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Magic bring him back.

Jason Hart: Incredibly mediocre, and probably a notch below Johnson, but he can dribble and is a team guy.

Don’t even think about: Jason Kidd, Andre Miller, Mike Bibby, Raymond Felton, Jarrett Jack, Ramon Sessions

Rasheed would make the magic the #1 team is league.. his size and 3 point shooting will make the magic deadly from every position.. nelson, carter, lewis, sheed, n howard is a huge lineup that can shoot and rebound. Plus D would be unstoppable

i agree with everything regarding wallace. i think bass might be out of our price range considering how young he is, and how much potential he has. if somehow we get turk, it's over

I really would not be on board with bringing Wallace here. As said before, he's got a lot of years on that body... Not to mention that last year at that mature age, he basically mailed in the last few months of the season. He was invisible in the Pistons' sweep by Cleveland. Is that the guy we want to come in and stabilize our starting line-up?

I'll say this another eighty times during the off-season, but I'd much rather have Bass or McDyess. They don't stretch the floor quite as well as 'Sheed, but they do have decent mid-range jumpers (especially McDyess), they work hard, play great defense, and rebound really well. We don't want to bring in another giant ego on this team when we already have 4 All-stars (Lewis isn't much of a diva in comparison to most All-Stars).

I really never have liked Matt Barnes' game, so I wouldn't like him unless we get him for the minimum. Getting Hill at the minimum would be great, and could maybe tie up his career in a nicer way if the Magic could win a title. I think he could do well in the starting line-up, playing about 15-20 minutes while Pietrus comes off the bench but plays the lion's share of the time. Getting Hedo to stay or grabbing Marvin Williams would be great, but highly unlikely, unfortunately.

As far as PG goes, we'll have to settle for the scraps, although as said, Marcus Williams has a lot of potential and is still young. I'm a huge UConn fan, so I remember watching him and thinking he was going to be one a really good PG in the league. After some of his great games in a New Jersey uni as a rookie when Kidd went out, I thought they had the heir apparent. But I don't think he's pulled it together mentally yet, and I think a coach like Van Gundy might be able to provide him with a system and criticism that might help him. Hell, it couldn't hurt and he's only 23 (look how long it took for Billups to develop).

It's interesting to me that no one is talking about Toronto for Turk...they have the $$ and they have the need.

As for Portland, they don't appear to have the cap space to sign Hedo straight up at his price, and word is they want Andre Miller, too. In that case, we might be able to sign and trade Turk, and maybe get Steve Blake in return. The backup point guard issues would be brilliantly solved this way. Other possibilities on the Blazers' roster include Travis Outlaw and Channing Frye. (Even though the dollars don't match between Turk and any of these players, there could be a trade exception generated to make a deal work, since Portland is under the cap.)

Don't rule out Marion yet; he solves all our defensive issues and brings in rebounding and toughness at either the 3 or 4 (so we still maintain our versatility). Outside of Sheed he is our best get imo, and can be had via a Hedo for Marion swap.

Orlando needs to keep Gortat. lie to him tell himhe'll start or even let him start.Magic can go on the cheap and get McDyess and Kwame Brown. PG is where im lost at. there are next to no options. sign and trade Hedo to portland for a PG,PF and maybe a 3rd player. i hear Jarret Jack is up for grabes.

If they sign Rasheed or another starting quality PF and bump Rashard back to the 3, the Magic will have a more conventional looking line up, and they will lose a lot of the mismatches Lewis and Hedo created last year, I think they have to keep Rashard at the 4 and Vince needs to be at the 2, that leaves the 3 open. And the best fit for this team would be from Zach's list, Hedo(duh), Hill and Barnes. Hill's a vet who has been healthy and has been playin well for the Suns, Barnes has also played well for them. He can't score as well as Hedo or even Hill but he will hit open 3's and has been a good defender(contrary to Zach's views). He was brought to Phoenix by Terry Porter to help Phoenix improve their D. They already had a bunch of scorers and needed the help on the other end, similar to Orlando's situation(Nelson, Carter, Lewis and Dwight can score plenty) The last thing this team needs is another ego, Wallace, that wants the ball and will bring a bad attitude to the team. Not to mention all the freakin T's he gets, and with Dwights new found habit for Tech's it's just a bad idea. I would Bass off the bench, I never mention him though becuase I though he'd be too expensive. Zaza too. As for McDyess, there was an ESPN report during the postseason that he had already resigned with Detroit. I think he'd be a great big guy off the bench, awesome rebounder and a solid Defender. He'd be my top FA pick for Gortat's and Battie's replacement.
    06/29/09 @ 13:01

First of all, how will bringin in Sheed do anything but create more mismatches? Put me down for Sheed or McDyess, I would love to get Bass b/c he's young and he has the best first name! I don't understand how Brandon Bass is an option but Charlie Villanueva isn't.

While I'm still sour on the whole Grant Hill situation, he is our best option, but I just don't like the fact that he used us and then tried to chase a ring by going to the Suns and then letting him come back to chase a ring.

I would love to bring in Marcus Williams, he would be the perfect backup point guard for us. He's young and still has tons of potential, and he's also a big point guard to compliment Jameer and guard the bigger point guards like Billups.

Bass, Bass, and more Bass. If we can get him to come in for the Mid Level for 4 years that would be the steal of the offseason. A PF rotation between him and anderson will complement the magic perfectly. Watch Bass on YouTube he does all the dirty work and has a good mid range game. Rashard isnt the same player at the PF positon. He was alot better as a SF, he used to post other SF up in seatle all day cuz of his size and post game. Plus rasheed and dice are old. now that we got vince we need to mix up some young talent with our core of vets.

Want to add that Hedo was playing a stars role and is not a star and is the reason why Carter is here and not him. i exspect V.C to put up his reg #s while Howard will get 25Pt+ 12rb+ a night. if someone else shows up to help this team will be way better than last.

Even though team will be better there no garuntee they go to the fianls.

I like BASS, DICE, and Sheed in about that order. Also there are rumors that Utah and it makes sense, that Utah as little money to resign many key players, so trading Millsap for Turk gives them a SF they need, resigning Booz and those 2 are in the prime. Millsap is younger and Dwight may hve to adjust his spacing, but 'Sap would be a steal and possible long term piece with franchise player Dwight.

Here are my personal power rankings:

    1) Gortat (definitely need his presence off the bench, guy is a solid player)
    2) Rasheed (I don't care for his attitude but the more I think of it the better he would be for this team)
    3) Bass (solid rebounder and will allow Dwight to take extended minutes off the floor)
4)Grant Hill (sadly enough I might take him, I hate how he stole $93m from us then left for the vet minimum)
    5) Barnes (not a big fan of his game but we need the depth)

After that I'm not too sure but I do know the next 31 hours will have a ton of rumors that progress into nothing.

The Magic's best option would be Rasheed. Here are the top 3 reasons why:
    1) Give Magic versatility to allow sheed to play the 5 when Dwight is on the bench and still play Lewis at 4.
    2) He gives us a toughness that we don't have. He can guard KG, Brand, Gasol, Dirk, and Duncan.
    3) When he chooses to play in the post, Sheed can be a beast. He can teach Dwight some post moves.

I think Grant hill would be nice, ut he does not spread the floor cause he is not a 3pt shooter. I have a crazy feeling we keep Turk or get Marion.
as far as point guards Marcus williams would be a good fit, but his lack of consistency scares me. If we can pull off a sign and trade for hedo, we need a pg and pf/c coming back.

Of that list I would like to sign Rasheed and either Matt Barnes or Ime Udoka using the mid level. Then Marcus Williams and either Antonio McDyess or Zaza Pachulia with vet minimum deals. Also I wouldn't rule out a trade as I think we still have two trade exceptions(unless one was sent to New Jersey in the Vince Carter trade) Plus I wouldn't mind trading JJ Redick if it can land us a better player. Also does anybody have any news about Fran Vazquez. He would be ideal right now as an added big man. Also I wouldn't mind Trenton Hassel for the vet minimum. I think because of the economic crisis and the fact that alot of teams are holding onto cap space for 2010 you may see some top names, that are mentioned as guys we shouldn't even think about, have to settle for mid level deals and you never know if we get involved. But I would be happy with Rasheed, Barnes, Marcus Williams, and Zaza Pachulia. If that happens I would look to trade Redick for either a center if we cant get Pachulia or McDyess for the vet minimum or a pick next year as next year is looking like a far better and just as deep draft class. We we could use some young players after dealing away Courtney Lee. Though if by some way we are able to retain Turk I would do it because it would give us a 5 man all star unit to compete with anybody. Depth can be filled in with vet minimum deals and 1 or two from our summer league team.

i would like to have turk back as much as the next guy...but what hes asking for would eat up all of what the magic are willing to spend/go over the tax for. If we only sign Hedo, then we have a 9 man roster with only 1 backup PG, and 1 backup big man..if you consider ryan anderson to be that big. So instead of signing just 1 guy, we need to focus on bringing in 3-5 guys with the 10mill we are willing to spend. I still like Rasheed more than brandon only because of his spacing and D, grant hill is intresting, but he cant shoot 3's....but still intresting....I would love to get both Raseed and Antonio, bring some of that detroit muscle we've lacked since "you know who" left. Right now our window to win a 'chip is 2 years...and who do you feel more comfortable to deliver that..bass or rasheed?

Hedo isn't a better shooter than Vince IMO jeffrey. Hedo's a very average shooter, he just steps it up in the clutch. It would be nice to re-sign him, but I think we got the better player. The only thing Hedo really has on VC is size, and maybe the clutch factor, although Carter has been known to hit game-winners in Jersey.

Why can't the Magic sign Hedo Turkoglu and/or Marcin Gortat? Couldn't the Magic rework Carter's deal to add a year at a much lower rate and spread the money over a longer period of time? Also couldnt they sign Turkoglu for more years? There are so many cheap options for Gortat, but what a team we would be if we had five legit threats and anyone could be the go to guy! Sign em all at all cost!!!!! Who would beat a line up with Howard, Lewis, Turk, Carter, and Nelson?
    06/30/09 @ 12:42
Don't forget about options like Shaun Livingston. If he is healthy he is a STEAL at the minimum. Also don't forget about the big men who will not require lots of money. We need someone who can battle and score about 5-10 points and/or be a defensive stopper. What else do we need?

If Gortat isn't going to stay (other teams paying more than 4M/year), I think the best thing to do is try to do a S&T with Houston.

Gortat [4M] for Lowry [2M] (the Rockets have trade exceptions to include).

Lowry would be the best backup for Nelson, plays defense and is really improving.

I like Udoka as a third option in the wing.

    Nelson / Lowry / AJ
    Carter / Pietrus / Redick
    Pietrus / Lewis / Udoka
    Lewis / Bass / Anderson
Howard / Bass / maybe Rakovic

    Pretty solid.

The market for big names just shrank as both Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur have decided not to opt out and they will remain in Utah. So the market for Turk will be bigger as he is probably the biggest name on the market as he is arguably the best player available. Now there just doesn't seem to be many players out there that are going to get more than the mid level. Turk and maybe Vareajo and Gordon. Maybe Marion and Miller but both are aging. Ariza will be hot name now. After that there are about 6 Restricted guys that may get more but there restricted status makes them a little harder to pry away. Somebody will probably get over payed but alot of free agenst will have to take what they can get in the NBA or go overseas or retire. The economic situation and the fact that everbody is waiting for 2010 will make teams more frugal and it isn't like their are a lot of teams out there with cap space anyway. Most of the league will only have the mid-level. So several free agents might be forced to stay with thier current teams like Boozer and Okur did and try thier luck next year. This should be a tight market but as always someone will over pay but teams were starting to get more shrewd anyway and now with the current state of affairs it will be hard for FAs to get alot of money.
    06/30/09 @ 19:17
    Comment from: JD [Visitor]
If we can't resign Turk(which we should at least try to do), then we should throw the mid-lvel at Rasheed Wallace. If we can't get Wallace then we go after Linas Kleiza or Brandon Bass. After that we may have to go after Artest or Marion if we want an impact player who would be capable of starting for us. Otherwise we would have to divide the mid-level up and hope that several players can really step up their game. We could then use the bi-annual exception to get a PG or a center like Zaza Pachulia or another forward like Matt Barnes. Then we go after a couple FAs with vet minimum deals.

    i want sheed...hes a beast...hes attitude changes the game...andersen...the birdman...get him...we need more D...when superman is in foul trouble...sheed and birdman combo....

get hedo...no matter what...lewis shootings gone in the finals...but hedo is hedo...doing his own thing...and sign barnes...hes a great back-up...

at the two....its really great cause i know carter and pietrus but reddick... needs his shooting from college...i need the duke superstar to be a magic star...

nelson is an all star...johnson is the main man...why??? he gets head to head against miller, rondo and williams... the only thing that shut him down is in the finals...no more minutes...bad decision for stan....

Forget sheed. He would be nice but he is not workt the luxury tax. Turk on the other hand is the man and we need to make that great lineup.

If you're the Magic, you have to think about winning now. The next 2-3 years could be dominant years for this team. Assuming Hedo really is gone, I like the Rasheed Wallace deal. Also, bringing in Grant Hill might bring positive closure to an otherwise bad experience for everyone involved. 'Sheed, no state income tax in Florida!

If not Hedo then make another splash and get Lee from NY. Another option (while mute) is Odom from Lakers. We need another athletic scorer/defender unless Ryan Anderson is the real answer. I just don't see the three point shooting center of Rasheed Wallace and his missing free throws and his horrible attitude making us a title contender. I may be wrong but maybe you all are just used to seeing Detroit beat Orlando. Lets look at the present. Rasheed was a no show in the Playoffs. We do not need that.

First off, Rasheed wants to win, period. He quit last year b/c the rest of the Pistons had already mailed it in. The guy is a competitor.

Let's not forget that he's been practically tutoring Dwight for the last 4 yrs (see the games head-to-head).

At his age, he will not be lobbying for a huge paycheck. Besides, none of the other real contenders are gonna offer the full MLE for a guy that's 35 when the season starts.

He knows his best opportunity to win is either with Boston, SA, or Orlando, and he LOVES D-12. Having VC just gave us an edge with the guys who only have 2-3 yrs to put a stamp on their careers. They know we mean business and aren't gonna stand pat while the other powerhouses improve to make a run at US!

The Lakers will not be the same team b/c they've already pissed off Ariza. If we are gonna pay for a FA, then we need to be on our bended knees to that guy. He'll be itching to pay them back like he was when he played against us last year. He gives us a ridiculous starting lineup balanced w/offense and defense, and somehow he learned how to shoot!!

We are automatically favorites if we have Ariza, and it will motivate 'Sheed, Grant Hill, and other talented veterans to take the VE to win a couple of titles. As Rudy T always says, "Never underestimate the heart of a champion!"

I say sign Shannon Brown, Rodney Carney, and David Lee (or Shawn Marion).
