Hedo Turkoglu hits the ground in Portland

07/02/09 | by Woody Wommack [mail] | Categories: News

Hedo Turkoglu and the Portland Trailblazers continued their free agent courtship on Thursday, this time with Hedo making a trip to the Rose City to meet with team officials.

While nothing is set in stone, it appears that a deal is all but done. The question is whether or not the Magic will get something out of the deal.

Portland is expected to be anywhere from 7-9 million under the salary cap, meaning that they can sign Turkoglu to a contract for that amount and give nothing in return to Orlando.

But if another team, say Toronto, offers Turkoglu more money, the only way the Blazers can match is through a sign-and-trade with the the Magic.

Portland has two players, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw, who are in the final year of their contract and could help the Magic almost immediately.

I have many more thoughts on why it's a terrible decision for the Blazers to sign Turkoglu, but I'll go into those later if/when the deal goes down.

In the meantime, here's what Hedo had to say when he arrived at the Portland Airport, courtesy of The Oregonian's Web site, OregonLive.com.

In other news, sounds like Gortat to Dallas and we get Bass, possible sign-and-trade.

Also from other stuff around the league:

Artest says he'll sign w/ the Lakers

Hedo is also getting courted by Toronto for a large deal (not sure if it's still on the table)

Ariza may go to Houston for full MLE

As long as no other quality players sign with Cleveland or Boston, I'm cool. They both failed with their veteran tag-along pick-ups last year, so I would love for their bad luck to continue.

I'm gonna miss Hedo, but he's not worth $10 mill with this economy at his age. I also don't think he'll have as big of an impact on any other team (maybe Toronto with their style) as he did with the Magic, so someone's definitely overpaying him.

Ill miss Hedo alooot too. But he will be a perfect fit over there, and they dont need a PG really if they have Turk, he will dominate ball usage rate with Roy but he will playmake and pass alot. Blazers will be much better I expect. I wish for the best for Hedo and whoever he signs with.

Just a thought
Why not sign Shannon Brown to replace Courtney Lee?
Then sign a big like ZaZa Pachulia (or any active big)
Then chase down a player like Odom, Marion, or Sheed?
