Goodbye Gortat? Reports say Marcin headed to Dallas

07/02/09 | by Woody Wommack [mail] | Categories: News, Players

According to multiple reports, including this one from ESPN.com's Marc Stein, Magic center Marcin Gortat has verbally agreed to sign an offer sheet with the Dallas Mavericks.

So what does this mean to the Magic? Well, a couple things. Since Gortat is a restricted free agent, the Magic reserve the right to match any offer Dallas makes. According to Stein, the Mavs are prepared to offer Gortat their full mid-level exception on a five year deal.

Gortat was a valuable member of Orlando's run to the NBA Finals, but is he really worth five million a year? He only averaged 3.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game during the regular season and 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in the playoffs. During his rookie year of 2007-08, Gortat barely got off the Magic bench.

If the Magic choose to match the offer, it will put them into the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax, meaning Gortat's contract with Orlando would essentially be for 10 million a year.

Because of these facts the Magic aren't expected to match, and Gortat is a goner.

What do you think? Are you sad to see Gortat go? Should the Magic match the offer from Dallas?

Not if it means we can get Brandon Bass to come over and be our starting power forward.

I won't miss Gortat, I like him but he is definitely not worth that much, let him walk! We need to sign Brandon Bass or Rasheed Wallace

Most think that we would sign Bass to the MLE if not maybe a touch less, so it's basically the same contract. Bass's contract would have to be at least $3.5m and more than likely $4.5.

The question is, would you rather have Gortat or Bass?

Lets get Bass (maybe a sign and trade of some sort with Dallas for Gortat). I would also like to get McDyess and Bruce Bowen, another PG (maybe keep Lue) and one more big body (Theo Ratlif).

Starting 5:
PG Nelson
SG Carter
SF Lewis
PF Bass/McDyess
C D12

6th Man: Pietrus

Bench:
AJ
Bass/McDyess
JJ
Bowen
Lue
Ratlif

I completely forgot about Ryan Anderson! Add him on the bench too.

If we can't keep Turk, the best fit for the Magic is Marvin Williams. Good defender, excellent shooter out to the 3-point line, and he's only 23. The Magic should throw their full midlevel at him and then sign someone like Rasho Nesterovic as a back-up center. We can make one significant signing, and fill all the holes with people playing for the veteran minimum.

PG - Nelson
SG - Carter
SF - Marvin Williams
PF - Rashard
C - Dwight

Bench
AJ
JJ
Pietrus
Ryan Anderson
Rasho/pu pu platter

i have a question for N8, i like how you set that up, but how do you think we could get both mcdyess and bass?

I think we need to go after a starting PF who can rebound, defend and hit a solid 15-20 ft jumper. The Lakers exposed us last year. D12 is our only dominant rebounder and he ends up going for the shot block on defense (which makes him defensive player of the year but also hurts us on the defensive boards). Bass scares me because of his height, but I have faith in Otis Smith. The guy knows what he is doing.

If we were to match you would have to question the direction this organization is heading in. No way in hell do you $5.65 million (The MLE IIRC) to a guy who will see 10-12 minutes a night tops.

The Twin Towers look with Marcin at PF failed miserably offensively, and while he was great in a backup center role for us and the few times he started this season, both parties need to move on.

Marcin gets to start, the Magic can sign a proven vet center who can produce near that level for $2 million or less. And the Mavericks don't have to deal with Erica Dampier as their starting center anymore. Win-win-win IMO.

I love Marcin Gortat, but I don't think he is worth the full MLE. I have the feeling he is going to be the big bust of this free agent class and will not be able to live up to his contract.

Again, I love the Hammer. But he has not had to be a starting center for a full season. He always did well in one game, but for a full 82 games? I am sure someone could easily gameplan him.

Wow, the Magic are gonna suck next year.

Let's just get this out of the way: THe Mabic are NOT winning the championship next year. So if the goal was getting to the next level with Vince Carter, then dream on.

The Magic may get past either the Cavs or Boston but they aint getting past both, especially if either one of them signs Sheed.

I really do feel like Hedo was disrespected by the Magic. They basically just let him go!!!!!!

I love MP as a sixth man, but if he is starting then he may be the dumbest starter on any contender. The guy makes the worst possible decisions when he puts the ball on the floor, particularly on the fastbreak.

PLEASE RE-SIGN HEDO!!!!!!!

Not worth that kind of money !!

Magic will do much better investing $3M on a fantastic young PF like Brandon Bass

Common guys...Hedo has max 2 good years left...Vince can fill this gap...sign and trade Gortat to mavs for Brnadon Bass. I don't care bout hammer...this guy is way overrated!! Then...it seems like Toronto has much more to offer than Portland...so sign an trade hedo in exchage for Rudy Fernandez! We still have the MLE to sign McDyess or Sheed. I prefer McDyess...We dont need another PF who's throwing 38% from beyond the Arc on doesn't make any offensive Rebounds...so i don't want Sheed. In Addition...sheed had a horrible second half of the season...including the Play-Offs and he could effect the team Chemistry in a bad way...Carter will do this already...we don't need another one...McDyess is a terrific defender and offensive Rebounder...plays center and PF....GO MAGIC

Even if we get bass (who should com off the bech), we still don't have a starting SF. I like the idea of Marvin Williams. But can we afford that guy?

I still don't know if the carter trade will be good or not. It all depends on how the bench looks like.
07/03/09 @ 07:52
Comment from: Josh [Visitor]
Hey guys,

Like alot of you, I am not saying the Carter trade will be bad or good. It depends on the moves the Magic make from here.

Bottom line: they just lost one of their backup centers/PFs (Battie), a playmaking PG (Alston,) one of our best young talents/spot shooters/defenders (Lee), and now probably our 2nd go to scorer and ball handler (Turk,) and our reliable backup center (Gortat.)

I am not saying the Magic are wrecked with these losses, but lets face it, Carter is not known as a defender so he may be a liability on the defensive end. That means we need Rashard to step his defense up even more AND we still need to invest in some key FA role players.

I don't care who it is. McDyess would be awesome (ever get tired of seeing him make shots and rebounds when we played Detroit?,) or Paul Millsap, or Brandon Bass, or Leon Powe. Bottom line, we need some more big bodies to help bang (McDyess) AND we need at least another rotational scorer.

The Lakers will still have Gasol, Odom and Bynum next year, and Boston likely will now have Garnett, Rasheed Wallace and Kendrick Perkins. Cleveland will now have Shaq (and maybe Varajao) to gaurd Dwight.) Bottom line: We need Dwight to develop his offensive game AND size even further, because he won't be able to just out-muscle all of these long and big players by himself. He also needs a big-body to go alongside him, no matter who that is.

If guys like Howard, Pietrus (who could be an effective shooter/slasher AND defender,) J.J., Ryan Anderson, Rashard, and Nelson ALL continue to develop deffensively and as shooters, the Magic will be FINE! AND they will have an all-star scorer the caliber of Carter on their team.

Gortat is a good player but people have to remember that life on the basketball court is a lot easier when you have to go against Dwight Howard everyday practice then have to play against most other team's second group.

We need a solid big man who won't sink the ship when Dwight sets out for foul trouble so unless he is going to be a legit forward or center in this league, there is no need to offer the midlevel exception.
07/03/09 @ 14:08
Comment from: Billy [Visitor]
To answer the question posted in the blog, no, Gortat is not worth $5+ million a year. At least not to the Magic. Maybe on a team where he'll play 20+ minutes a night, that is justified. Hedo isn't worth $10 million a year and he was way more important to the Magic than Gortat (who I like), so to justify paying Gortat even half of what Hedo was asking is silly.

Also, to the crazy people out there, the Magic DID go after Hedo. Hedo just wanted more money, and I don't blame either side for not being able to reach a deal. Hedo wanted to cash in for one last time before his career is done, the Magic didn't want to overpay him, let Paul Allen overpay him in Portland. The Magic still have moves to make; people going crazy over the fact that they're missing this piece and that piece are very short-sighted. This is still a good destination for free agents (no state tax, sunny weather, new arena opening, young contender), so let's sit back and take a deep breath instead of condeming the organization.

Lets quit cryin bout Hedo or Gortat! Let'em both go or do a sign n trade with them for BBass and Outlaw/Fernandez. We need to grab Sheed as well w/MLE b4 the celts. I even welcome the idea of AI in Orlando now that he is so cheap n nobody wants him. He would be a great asset with his scoring n experience, not counting the attitudes. Give the guy a break! We need him. Better start makin offers b4 we run out of people!!! Go Magic

The magic just CHOKED in the finals! They made it to the big show only to CHOKE it away. I blame the coach, but will we see what he does next year. We needed to get rid of Hedo because he doesn't play D very well..as seen against the cavs and lakers. He will never get a shot at the finals in his career again. We need to keep Gortat, tho i know he's not worth a lot. I didn't like the signing of carter because he also CHOKES!! We just added another Hedo to the team. We need to get Rasheed to provide veteran leadership and experience, and he's clutch! If we don't get him, Magic fans we are in for a MAJOR disappointment next season because we are not even going to make it to the eastern finals!
07/04/09 @ 11:14
Comment from: Caleb Johnson [Member] Email
LMAO. We need Sheed to provide leadership? Get out of here. If we're going for a leader, it would be McDyess, one of the best leaders and most well-liked players in the game. All-in-all though, this is Jameer and Dwight's team. Jameer's been a tremendous leader for the past couple years, and Dwight really grew in that role in the playoffs.

I'm still really hoping that Sheed accepts somewhere else. If we could sign him for $2 million or less, then he'd be worth it. But if we're going to waste our full MLE on him, we're going to regret it. I'd much rather us go for Bass or Marvin Williams.

And to everyone saying that we lost so much, we did, but no team is immune to this sort of change. We all knew we were going to move Rafer and Battie and lose Gortat, and we all knew re-signing Hedo wasn't a sure thing (nor a popular choice until after the 2nd round). Lee came as a shock, but we got a career 22 ppg guy for him. We still have our 3 best players and All Stars, added an 8-time All Star to the mix, and have the X-Factor back in Peaches. We'll be alright, assuming we successfully use that MLE and the cap space we have remaining on some solid contributors.

Theo Ratliff would be a very solid vet minimum signing. He's still a very good shot blocker and accepts his role. The only things I wonder is if he has anything left in the tank, and if he's willing to play with Anthony Johnson after AJ dunked all over him in Game 1 of the first round.
