Ryan Anderson doesn't waste his time with two-point jumpers

11/05/09 | by Zach McCann [mail] | Categories: Players, Analysis

Back in my junior-high years, when I was playing AAU basketball, my coach always told me to only shoot three-pointers and lay-ups. He said that long two-pointers and mid-range jumpers were the most inefficient shot in basketball, and — being a relatively small, relatively non-athletic kid who could shoot pretty well — I should either shoot for three points or attack the rim and try to get to the free-throw line. It made complete sense at the time, and that way of thinking has clearly taken over the NBA.

NBA teams attempted a record 44,583 three-pointers last season, and the league saw its first 3-point based offensive team — the Orlando Magic, of course — reach the NBA Finals. As the statistical revolution continues in professional basketball, teams have begun to realize that the highest percentage shot is a free throw, followed by a two-point shot at the rim, followed by a three-pointer.

As the NYT story pointed out, you have to shoot 60 percent on mid-range jumpers to equal the same output of a team that shoots 40 percent from three-point range.

If there’s one player on the Orlando Magic who symbolizes this ideal, it’s Ryan Anderson.

Anderson, a 6-foot-10 power forward, has more or less abandoned anything not at the rim or behind the arc. Only 13 percent of Anderson’s shots this season are in the 3-point circle but away from the rim, and only 8 percent of his shots are two-pointers outside the paint.

Anderson has embraced Orlando’s offensive strategy, and that’s a big reason the Magic have been able to cope with the absence of Rashard Lewis. And it’s also a big reason Anderson will continue to earn minutes even when Lewis returns.

Ryan Anderson shot selection, 2009-10
At Rim: 11-20, 50 percent
<10 feet: 2-3, 67 percent
10-15 feet: 0-2, 0 percent
16-23 feet: 0-3, 0 percent
Threes: 15-34, 44.1 percent

Whether it’s by personal choice, coaching instruction or a little bit of both, Anderson doesn’t care about the lost art of the mid-range jumper. His ability to finish at the rim and shoot from deep — and nothing in between — is a big reason the Magic insisted he be included in the Vince Carter-Courtney Lee trade.

You have never attacked the rim. And I disagree that a mid-range game is inefficient. Just ask Horace Grant, Glenn Robinson, and PJ Brown. All were players who tore apart defenses because the midrange is one of the weakest parts of any defense.

Jeffs,

Those players played in the 1990s, when scoring was at an all-time low and the hand-check rules made penetration much more difficult than it is in today's NBA.

I think this is a good analysis, but it's all about playing to your strengths. The short to mid range game is working pretty well for Bass.

I never thought I would hear PJ Brown being mentioned as someone tearing apart a defense, besides body-slamming them.

As already said, it's a different game now. MJ in this game would make a mockery of everything. Magic would be unstoppable. Hakeem would put up ridiculous numbers without having to worry about guys grabbing and holding on to him in the post.

You know, watching the first 5 games this year, I've noticed Anderson consciencely look for and step back behind the line before taking his shot attempts whenever possible. Interesting story indeed!

The mid-range game works well for Brandon Bass because he's efficient. Last year, Brandon ranked 15th in the NBA in two-point jumpshots (45.4%). So it makes sense for Bass to concentrate on that aspect of that game and play to his strengths.

Anderson's thinking makes sense for a 6-10 player who can shoot really well and who is not athletically gifted as others and does not have an efficient post up game..He plays to his strengths and where he can benefit team (open 3s, shot fake and hard drive, offensive rebounds).. Hes a complimentary player and thas what he brings..he needs to do those and he will floursih with magic and contribute to winning many championships (also remember hes only 21)

Does anyone think its possible that will put a big 3 in to cause mismatch problems again.... ? possibly Ryan Anderson, Rashard Lewis and Dwight Howard? I think it might actually work. I believe that Ryan Anderson has everything Turk had minus the ability to really create plays. But we now have Vince and a healthy Jameer for that so I don't think we would need him for that. Please let me know what you think.

Nice look. SVG is one of the best coaches in the modern game because he understands this. And yes, Anderson is a great weapon on this team. Love his shot.

Ryan will not be put at the 3 because of his defense. Rashard will get some more time there depending on whether or not he can guard 3's (remember, he did not have a good defensive reputation when he was younger and more athletic as a SF in Seattle, albeit on a different team with a coach not as good as Stan). However, Ryan has not shown any special defensive accumen even guarding 4's, so expecting him to guard wings on the perimeter is too much at this stage of his career.

I stated this yesterday that Anderson should be the 3 and Lewis the 4. Look... Turk was not the best defender guarding 3's, but he created mismatches. The same would go for Anderson. I think Anderson is more aggressive than Turk was, especially around the rim. Look at the Phx game. Lewis and Anderson are about the same height, so if they need to switch on defense, that is also an option. I don't see Anderson as taking a step back on the defensive side of the ball compaired to last yrs team.

So, you think VC is being lazy for taking a few games off to heal? Who even said it was his choice? Maybe SVG told him to sit out and heal properly. Wouldnt it make more sense to lose VC for 2 or 3 games and heal correctly than th ehave him play and risk injuring himself for the season. Remember, there are many more games to come.

Actually, Vince mentioned that he would like to go out and play, but that the Magic do not want to risk further injury. Don't blame him for following orders, or the team for being cautious. Yes, the Magic could use him against Detroit, but really this is a good time to let him heal, and come out strong when he returns.

You were absolutely right... Although the Magic lost against Cleveland, VC looked great. Unfortunately it wasn't Howard's night with anything and the second half looked as if we were the worst shooting team in the league. The main thing is our defense. We made Mo Williams look like a superstar. I mean hes good but not as good as we made him look that night.. we will get them next time when they have the match up problems next time.
