With Rashard Lewis back, the Magic take care of the Bobcats

11/16/09 | by Zach McCann [mail] | Categories: Recaps

In another grind-it-out game against the Charlotte Bobcats, the Orlando Magic overcame a below-average shooting night to beat the Bobcats 97-91.

Seven players scored in double figures for the Magic, highlighted by Jameer Nelson’s 16 points. The game was close throughout and wasn’t decided until Vince Carter sunk a three-pointer with 53 seconds left to make it 93-87.

  • Three seconds

    1. The rust showed on Rashard Lewis. You won’t see too many 0-for-6 lines next to Lewis’ name — this is the same guy who made a three-pointer in 56 consecutive games last season. He looked like Rashard Lewis tonight, but his jumpshot was off. It’s hard to blame him, nor be surprised, for struggling when his teammates and opponents are near midseason form and he’s just getting back into it. He struggled on defense as well, drawing ire from Van Gundy at several spots throughout the game, especially in the first half. But I know how I feel when I take a week off of pick-up basketball, and Lewis is obviously playing at a much-higher level with a much-longer layoff.

    2. Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson played really well. Is it me, or did Bass look more comfortable playing center? It’s the position he spent the majority of his time at last season, and he seems to look more natural playing in the paint. All 10 of his points tonight came at the basket or at the free-throw line. Maybe that’s how he is, not the guy who’s trying to stretch the floor enough to keep his man off Dwight Howard. And Anderson didn’t miss a beat after a week off, scoring 12 points in 19 minutes. These types of games are becoming routine for Anderson. Anderson and Bass led the Magic with +13 and +10, respectively.

    3. It was a win, but one the Magic will forget tomorrow. After the game, Stan Van Gundy said, “It’s a win and you move on. They know. They’re not dumb. We’re just not playing at a very high level.” Last season, the Magic made a living off keeping it close for three quarters and winning the fourth quarter.
There will be plenty of games like this throughout the season; the key is to win them. That said, the Magic haven’t looked good in a couple weeks now. I know there are injuries, sicknesses and chemistry issues, but it’d be nice for the Magic to come out and blow a team out.

  • What to like

The Bobcats shot 50.7 percent, compared to Orlando’s 42.9 percent, yet the Magic were able to find a way to win. I feel like things have been very negative around here and Magic nation lately, but the Magic are 8-3 — has Orlando ever been in a position to complain about 8-3 before? I realize the schedule has been cake, but still. This team is finding a way to win.

The bench, powered by Bass and Anderson, played really well and helped build a lead in the third quarter.

  • What not to like

Howard’s still not right offensively, and he’s still letting the referees get to him. There isn’t anything original to say, but another five fouls tonight and it’s clear that he’s not doing anything differently than he was earlier in the year. He wants superstar calls, and he’s not getting superstar calls — it’s time to adjust.

  • Magic number: History tells us that Rashard Lewis will struggle from three-point range in the next game, as well. In games after he shoots 0-for-5 or worse from three-point range, Rashard Lewis is shooting 16 percent from behind the arc.

  • Magic’s best: In a game lacking any individual star performance, Carter scored 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including the game-icing three-pointer.

  • Magic’s worst: Matt Barnes had a forgettable game, scoring three points and coughing up three turnovers in 17 minutes.

  • Up next: The Magic play Oklahoma City at home on Wednesday, receiving a chance to make up for the 28-point beatdown the Thunder gave the Magic last week.

If we play defense the next two games like we did the in the first half against the Bobcats we are in deep trouble. OKC and Boston can score and score fast. I have no idea why our defense seems to come in small burst...

Rashard looked rusty however it is his fist game back. I am sure he will be back to 100% very soon....at least I hope he will.

I do agree that Bass and Anderson did play very well. I think they know they need to fight for minutes so it is no surprize to see those two come out balling.

See you all at the game Wednesday!

The Defense will come.. The team this year is still in early stages of finding chemistry and how to play with each other. The team just needs to fight through the early part of the season and develop more team cohesion on D. Also, howard needs to start playing better on D and stop complaining bout refs. His play is the biggest difference from last year. He needs to be dominate again which he really hasnt been all year except for a few games

Rashard Lewis will be fine. There is no question about that. And he will go through shooting slumps in the season. This is normal for him from what I've seen the past few seasons.

I haven't seen Dwight Howard dominating consistently. Is it the foul trouble? He only got 5 shots last night? Is this because other teams just send him to the foul line? He needs to work on those FTs!!

rashard will be ok his first game back give him a chance howard just needs to play his game and dunk the the dang ball stop worrying about getting into foul trouble and dominate like he has in the past i think vince carter is very overated i would rather have turk back bench carter and give more minutes to ryan and barnes and bass

the missing piece that we don't talk about on defense is SVG. The fact that we played good defense in the second half means we can do it. I think Stan the Man will make sure that gets consistent.

Question of the week: What if Dwight has a disappointing season?

We certainly need Bass playing Center. This well serve us well down the road towards the trade dealine and we can do a deal involving Gortat (I still think Otis has something up his sleeve and Gortat will not be in Orlando to finish out the year).

Regarding Reshard, I much rather see him have this type of game vs. the Bobcats at home as opposed to vs. the Celtics on the road.

With the way Bass has been struggling and Anderson playing solid, do you think starting Nelson, Carter, Lewis, Anderson, and Dwight would work?

We'd have 3 6'10"+ guys again like last year, and still be able to spread the floor. Anderson then becomes our 5th scoring option, and the way he's been playing, he might be the best 5th scoring option in the league. Then you have Pietrus first off the bench at the 2, Williams the 1, Barnes the 3, Bass the 4 and Gortat at the 5. I know a lot of people dont like the idea of putting Rashard at the 3, but on offense I really think it would help becuase Anderson can still spread the floor, and the only 3's in the league that can challenge Lewis' post up are LeBron, Artest/Odom, and Melo... And he could still be efficient w/ his little post up. And on defense his 6'10" frame and length should be solid to defend most 3's pretty well. He matched up a few times with Gerald Wallace last night and did fine. He just played off and made him shoot over him. He has such a high reach he can play an extra step off.

I think it would be our most efficient line up and would let Pietrus and Barnes go back to being role players where they are most effective. Amd more importantly it would give Anderson the PT he needs and deserves to be getting.

    What do you guys think?

I told Zach awhile ago I would love to see Rashard at the 3 while Ryan plays the 4, as our starting line up.

The problem is Rashard would have to adjust to playing the 3 again, which he hasn't done since his days in Seattle. He also isn't that good of a perimeter defender when he plays opposing SF but then again with Dwight behind you, you don't have to be all that great.

Idk what to do, I'm sure SVG will work something out.
