Jameer Nelson to miss 4-to-6 weeks after tearing Miniscus

11/17/09 | by Woody Wommack [mail] | Categories: News, Players

A day after the Orlando Magic welcomed Rashard Lewis back to the lineup, the team lost another key player. Orlando's starting point guard Jameer Nelson suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter of last night's victory over Charlotte and will have surgery tomorrow that will force him to miss at least a month.

From the team:

Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson will undergo arthroscopic surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Nelson was injured in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game vs. Charlotte and underwent an MRI Tuesday morning.

It is estimated that Nelson will be out four-to-six weeks following the procedure.

Nelson had started all 11 games for the Magic, averaging 13.7 ppg. and a team-high 5.5 apg.

If Nelson misses exactly four weeks, he'll be out for 15 games. If he misses six weeks, it will be 22 games.

Clearly this is a tough pill to swallow for Magic fans, especially considering what happened to Jameer last year. Luckily, Orlando has Jason Williams to step in and Anthony Johnson to serve as his backup.

We all know that both of them can play, but coming of the bench and being a full-time NBA starter are two different things.

We've seen the Magic carry only 13 players for most of the season, and with injuries to Nelson and Adonal Foyle, the Magic will only have 11 healthy bodies on the roster. Now the real question is whether or not Orlando will go after a point guard to keep on the roster in meantime, somebody like Allen ... no, never mind.

What do you think? Can the Magic survive with out Jameer? Should the team look into adding another point guard to the roster?

I think it will be a lot like playing with Rafer last year since Williams has the same playmaking ability (possibly better) and the same streaky shooting that Alston had. I do they think they need to sign someone to the minimum, but it needs to be a young pg. There could be games when Williams and Johnson just don't have their legs.

Good thing they signed J-Will as insurance. This is a big blow, but the Magic can handle it. It's weird, I was saying the Magic were the deepest team in the league and can handle any injury... Uh, well, my theory is being tested.

I think the team will be just fine with j-will and aj they got more than enough scoring to make up for jameer! Its unfortunate for nelson who is goin to miss out on another oppurtunity to make the all star game this yr bcuz of injury by the time he comes back it be a lil to late. Maybe next yr!!

That really puts a damper on my Tuesday. So there's a good chance that by the time the new year comes around, the Magic will have had their starting line-up for a grand total of 1 game.

I think the Magic are definitely better suited to handle the absence this year than we were last year (AJ is a perfectly capable back-up and Williams can fill in as the starter on a regular basis better than AJ could last year). But... this still sucks and will continue to hamper the Magic's development.

When did he even get injured? He finished out the game.

Just fine? I hope so.....Williams is capable as wel as AJ however we really need a healthy line up going into the playoffs. This team has yet to gel and we need everyone healthy to do that.

AI? Iverson? I don't know....He's a prima donna and I don't know if Otis will allow someone with his ego on this team. Take away the bad attitude and you have a great player. Who knows...

What we need is Boston to get their share of injuries come playoff time ;)

AI, or Marbury just for insurance if J-Will goes down

AI is a massive risk. we know he wants to start and he wont start with us.

if we can pay him minimum salary and play him off the bench and we can be assured he is happy with that it could work.

We are a championship calibre team and a player in his position needs to be playing for one

Oh and it sucks for Jameer.

If he started up until the all star break and we are looking like a high 50 win team he had another crack at the All Star game he missed out on last year.

6 weeks off and he has next to no chance

The question of "should the Magic add another Gaurd?" the Answer is the Answer.
It fits AI's desire to play quality minutes for a contender.
I for one like J Nelson but ask yourself "how many teams would he truly be a starter on?"
Low points low assists and low height.
AI still has a killer offensive instinct and not sure if you all noticed but, not many guys on the magic can create there own shots very easily.
For D12 to be at his best requires a multitude of things to be working. A point guard like him that can score very well still and his quickness opens up alot of quick double teams near the basket. More oppurtunities for rebounds for the bigs.
Even if AI isnt the 1 we still need a better player at that position. A true point guard would be nice.

I think the Magic should definitely sign another point guard given Jameer's injury history. Also Orlando should look into upgrading that point guard spot as Nelson has not looked like the same player from last year.

The Magic have 3 point guards... y'know, in case of injury. It's only a problem if Williams or Johnson now get hurt *knock on wood*.

Kind of wish we had acquired C.J. Watson now. We'll be alright with White Chocolate running the show, but it would be nice to have another scoring PG in the lineup. I just hope we're getting all of our injuries out of the way early this year.

Sign Al, he will love playing for a contender team and with him we can trade JJ and make him the backup shotting guard behind vince carter.

i agree that ai could play ar shooting guard too, you could also play Carter at the 3 at times and Rashard at 4, wow who could stop us, I think we are in deep and need a True scorer like AI to really put us over the TOP, Can you spell Champs

A few points about Iverson and such;

1) No need to trade for him he was realeased and is a free agent. He can sign with any team.
2) He can be trouble and he can be an asset as well. He complained loudly and has done so a few times in the past. Imagine Nelson back and we lose a game or two...You think Iverson won't complain about being a back up?
3) I still respect Iverson from when he played on the Olympic team that won a bronze....Iverson played asa team player and also playe dhis as$$ off for team USA.
4) Maurbury? Otis Smith called him a "cancer", don't hold your breath.
5) It's 4-6 weeks, not a season eneding injury. Like it or not Nelson is out point guard and will return as our point guard. We will win or lose with him at point.

The season is still young....hang in there Magic fans! See you tonight!

I think JWill will run the team fine, but the way this season has been going, you can't bank on no other injuries. I think AI like Marbury are "problem players" that comes with baggage...but AI would fit nicely, definatly over Marbury. The team can still function on a high level even with Nelson out as long as we stay healthy. I wouldn't surprise me if Otis Smith tries to pull something off before Friday's show down with the C's.

I dont feel that team should find another PG just yet. I really dont see the Need to get Iverson , i feel like he would destroy the flow and Chemistry of a Decent orlando Offense. His game has slowed down Dramatically and you can see it on the court. He thinks he should start and play 30 mins agame and he wont even go to "Practice " yea we talking about Practice man ! I think J will should do ok for orlando if he can use his quickness to penetrate the lane which will help open doors for our 3 pt shooters and get some easy touches for Dwight. Rafer did a decent Job of that last year getting to the paint and making Kicks. The only thing that scares me about williams is he may get a bit trigger happy from the 3 point line in this offense and forget he's the PG and needs to set things up. But i'm anxious to see how we fair tonight having almost be back at full strength and avenging a miserable loss to OKC. Go Magic !!

IT.

ok... lets just step back and think for a second..I have been been following the magic for years and one thing ive learned is you need to keep the big man happy!! Sure trade d12s best friend in nelson and see where we end up. Im a big nelson fan and i havnt been impressed at all with his play.and not because of his point average its on the defensive end that opposing pgs have been penetrating at will. Suck it up and get defensive minded lets be honest as of rite now nelson isnt the key that is making or breaking the team.If I could say anything it sux because of chemistry. Its not the end of the world he'll be back before the allstar game. Lets see what you got jwill!! We already kno what AJs got and i like those quality minutes......

The biggest problem with Trading Nelson is really what is he worth ? I mean what would you give up for a Decent Fragile PG. His biggest problem is his injury and that's what hurts his value

Nelson is going no where. He is a strong pg with great penetration skills which we need with all the shooters on our team. I agree he needs to pick up the D, but so does the entire team. Look at Howard, he's not making a strong bid for defensive player of the yr (hardly no blocking thus far) Our team as a whole is allowing more pts this yr than last. It's something that needs to improve all around. Don't give up on the little tank!!!

AI isn't the answer and never has been. He has NEVER been a team player except on a team when there were many players better than him so he had no choice. He's never been a good shooter, he can't shoot 3's, he hogs the ball, he's not a true point guard. JW isn't a great shooter either but he'll distribute the ball and is a much better fit for this team. AI had his chance on a contender with Denver and they didn't want him back. He'll never be satisfied being less than the #1 option and he would only be one of many on this team. Starburry? Same thing. You do NOT bring in either of them to a team that actually wants to be a team. We'll be fine but it would help to get a young guy just in case our two older guys get hurt. We also need to hope that Jameer comes back well and shows that last year wasn't a fluke.

Bring back skip-to-my-lou Rafar Alston! Never shoulda gotten rid of him in the first place! Serves the Magic right for what they did to him in the playoffs last year!

Now after all this complainin of a back up PG and look what AJ does against the Hawks LOL told everybody the only thing AJ does when he goes in is his Job , he got alot of open looks and he knocked them down he didnt try to force to many shots and he got the ball to the open shooters. He did his job its that simple. Ai would have shot pretty much every single time he's open he would have been a cancer to the magic, he's a selfish player with a big heart and passion, he cant play as a team player on a team full of all stars, he carried the Philly teams in his prime now he can barely carry his own weight. Good byE AI keep it movin i'm sure you will get a Hall of Fame ballot
