Orlando Magic rip Thunder, and some thoughts from Cavaliers-Wizards

11/19/09 | by Zach McCann [mail] | Categories: Recaps

Let me start off by saying that I’m in Washington D.C. for the week, and I spent Wednesday night at the Cavaliers-Wizards game at the Verizon Center. As both teams figure to challenge Orlando in the East, I figure some quick and random thoughts on this game are relevant to this blog. Here’s what I took away from this game:

  • The Wizards won the game because of a dominant fourth quarter in which Gilbert Arenas played ZERO minutes. I guess the moniker Agent Zero works on more than one level. With Arenas and Antawn Jamison resting, the Wizards took and built the lead behind some exceptional play from Earl Boykins, Deshawn Stevenson and Andray Blatche (and LeBron was playing most of the time). I don’t know, the Wizards fans love their starting five of Arenas-Miller-Butler-Jamison-Haywood, but it seems like there isn’t enough ball movement with those five on the floor.

  • Speaking of Jamison, it was his first game this season. He didn’t disappoint, scoring 11 first-quarter points on his way to 31 for the game. Though he’s a pretty good player, he’s part of the reason the Wizards don’t scare me for the Magic. They have no one to defend Dwight Howard, and Jamison is a really similar player to Rashard Lewis; he shoots a lot, plays a lot on the perimeter, is an adequate defender and doesn’t really rebound — only Jamison doesn’t have the luxury of the league’s best rebounder next to him.

  • Shaq didn’t play, and — in an unrelated note — the Cavs offense didn’t look good. LeBron did whatever he wanted, but the Cavs mustered very little outside of that. Mo Williams looked more like the Mo Williams of last season’s playoffs, missing almost everything he took. Honestly, neither team seemed like they could beat a healthy Orlando team. But it is November.

Now, on to the Magic game. I didn’t watch it until very late last night. But it was great to see the Magic take it to the Thunder, who crushed the Magic on Nov. 8.

The Magic used another balanced scoring attack, with eight players scoring at least nine points. Vince Carter led the way with 18 points.

  • Three seconds

    1. The team played with an intensity that’s been missing over the last couple weeks. Said Dwight Howard after the game, via the Sentinel: “I think tonight as a team we brought a lot of energy and our effort was great from the first quarter to the fourth quarter. So, that was a great thing to see because in past games we haven't played with a lot of energy. But tonight we made a great step forward in playing with a lot of energy.” While I don’t always buy the lack of energy excuse — it’s usually more a matter of execution, but it’s easier to blame it on energy — it does seem valid here. This team was not putting enough emphasis and focus on the defensive end of the floor over the last week or two, and tonight that changed.

    2. It didn’t take long for Rashard Lewis to shake off the rust.

Playing both the 3 and 4, Lewis played one of his best all-around games in a Magic uniform and nearly posted his first career triple-double. Lewis registered 17 rebounds, 10 points and 9 assists — and the assists are an element to Lewis’ game that we’ll continue to see more of as he plays small forward more and more. Most of the assists were to 3s, it seemed, but it was still impressive. After the way Lewis struggled from the field on Monday night, it was great to see him play well against Oklahoma City.

    3. This was practically a scheduled loss for Oklahoma City. The Magic had Tuesday off after a home game on Monday, while Oklahoma City played an away game on Tuesday night, then travelled in the middle of the night to Orlando for a game the next night. This is one of the NBA’s “scheduled losses,” where the circumstances make it incredibly difficult for one team to win over the other. Still, the Magic had to love getting revenge on the Thunder after a blowout loss last week.

  • What to like

Sans Jameer Nelson, the Magic’s new point-guard duo of Jason Williams and Anthony Johnson played efficiently and effectively. Williams didn’t blow up the stat sheet, but he did what he needed to do — stay out of the way and get the ball to the team’s playmakers. His four points and five assists won’t make the ESPN bottom line, but a couple other stats — such as one turnover and holding Russell Westbrook to 3-of-11 shooting — were instrumental to the victory.

Also, let it be known that Brandon Bass seems to be on the outside looking in at the Magic’s rotation. Bass didn’t see the floor until 6:21 of the fourth quarter, when the game was well in hand.

Mickael Pietrus played his best game of the season, scoring 14 points and locking down Kevin Durant. Pietrus’ +26 was only outdone by Rashard Lewis (+29) and Jason Williams (+27).

  • What not to like

The Magic were outscored 36-20 in the fourth quarter. To most, it doesn’t matter much in a blowout game, but you know Stan Van Gundy didn’t like it.

And Howard saw foul trouble again, exiting the game midway through the first quarter after picking up his second foul. Yeah, I don’t think Gortat is going anywhere anytime soon.

  • Magic number: The Magic’s defensive rating is down to 102.8, which is 11th in the league. They were 21st in the league a week ago.

  • Magic’s best: I’m going to say Pietrus, who played exceptionally on both offense and defense. This is the Pietrus they need. It seems like Pietrus been asleep for much of this season.

  • Magic’s worst: It’s hard to give a “worst” in a game like this, but let’s say Matt Barnes, for no other reason than he had a team-worst -16 in the +/- department.

  • Up next: The Magic will receive their biggest test of the season on Friday night, heading to the northeast to take on the Celtics. The game is at 8 p.m. and it’ll be televised on ESPN and Sun Sports.

What is going on with Bass? I thought he was going to be a double double type guy while playing more than 30 minutes.

I know he has the talent, but he is playing horrible. He's always lost in defense and does not help much on offense.

Bass is not getting enough burn. When he gets minutes he produces well, and is a young player with plenty of upside.

SVG has done an awesome job here in Orlando and there is no doubt about that, but I would like him to move Lewis to the SF position and start Anderson at PF.

That will allow Bass to come in for Anderson. Barnes/Pietrus for Lewis.

For some reason people think Lewis cant guard SF's. Which is nonsense because we had Hedo at that spot last year, who is a worse defender than lewis. Plus Rashard played SF in Seattle for 7 years.

I think Anderson coming off the bench at this point is more for offensive punch. I (like many other Magic Fans) would also like to see him start, but that doesn't look like it's happening anytime soon.

I mean it sucks because it's looking like Bass won't be seeing any game time, but I can't blame Stan. The offense last night was pretty much firing on all cylinders because of the spacing of our three-point shooting bigs. Bass doesn't really help with the spacing.

I still think Bass can bring a lot to this team because he's an energy guy who brings bulk to our lineup. He just needs to work on this defense. (His defensive rotation is killing him!)

Well the thing with BAss is he's going ot be a Situational Player for the magic. He doesnt fit the complexity of the Magic offense due to he cant shoot very well outside at the 3point line. But the thing is that when orlando plays teams like boston , and cleveland again and the atlantas they cant afford to leave rashard lewis out on the block guarding a KG, Rasheed Wallace, or Josh Smith. So while were playing teams like the Thunder there's really no place for him. But he should get alot of minutes Friday Night against a Big celtics line up. Of course Dwight Will be in foul trouble some how some way against the Celtics so expect to see a little bit more of bass then you think.

And yes i agree that Bass's defensive rotation skills ar horrible. He got Exploited well by lebron in the Cavs game when he kept leaving JJ hickson alone next to the bucket.

I have to disagree with Pietrus being the star of the game.. I'm with JWill. His hustle every time left the defense rushing to get set, and really set the tone for our pace of game. He got the ball to the right people, didn't walk up and down the court, and didn't hog the ball like our buddy Jameer(who?). I'm interested to see how this plays out with JN being out and JW starting.. My feeling is that he will step up to the plate and be just the shot in the arm this chemistry needs.

Hey Zach, it was nice to meet you at the Wizards game ... but now I'll contest your assertion that Jamison is like Rashad Lewis in the "doesn't really rebound" area.

Over the past two seasons, Jamison has finished in the NBA's top 10 in both total rebounds and rebounds per game.

But as far as Jamison being a defender? He's probably less than adequate.

I'm pretty sure that Rashard Lewis had 17 points and 10 rebounds, not 17 rebounds and 10 points...

On an unrelated note, I believe that Ryan Anderson should be relegated to the bench and play when Rashard Lewis sits for 12 minutes per game. Anderson can definitely and should definitely play 20-25 minutes per night, but Van Gundy has repeatedly said how he likes it when Anderson can fill the void when Lewis sits.

I like Brandon Bass, but really the Magic have an embarrassment of riches in its frontcourt. It's not a big problem if he plays spot minutes (ie when Lewis plays the SF)

Matt Barnes should be the backup to Pietrus at the 3. Air France should average around 30 mpg too...

My main concern right now is how D-12 is in constant foul trouble. Is he completely healthy?

My other concern is whether or not J-Will can play 25-30 minutes per night, and whether or not his shot will be falling on most nights...

I think what he was saying about jamison and rebounding was he's not a Dominant Rebounder he's not always on the block when he gets those rebounds sometimes he'll get 4 or 5 just long rebounds, rather then being under the rim jocking for position. I do agree that someone like a Ryan Anderson should Come off on a Bench roll , because it allows us to maintain the same offense when we dont have all our starters in the game. Gortat at the 5 Anderson the 4 Barnes at 3 JJ and AJ at the back court. So we still have the floor spreaded with shooters. Or even throw bass in their in the mixture and let him roam the 4 he could probably get some easy buckets against others teams reserves. he's not a bad player at all he's just trying to find a role in orlando's Offense.

Depending on the situation and match up, Bass needs to be the back up center right along with Gortat.

Stop playing Bass at the 4. He is not a 4 in this offense on this team.

Why do Magic fans/reporters constantly have something to say about the Cavs even in situations where they shouldn't be involved? It's almost as if they're starting to realize that ol' Oti screwed up the roster big time, and now all those matchup advantages they had in last years playoffs are now gone, along with the teams hopes of getting passed the Celtics OR the Cavs in a 7 game series this time around.

Btw, not that this holds any relevance at all, because it was one game, in November no less, but the Wizards outscored the Cavs 17 at the free-throw line alone, and attempted 20 more. The officiating was blatantly one sided in the 2nd half. The Cavs played horrible, for sure, but the Wizards were in no way 17 points better than the Cavs. Not that night, not the next time the play, not ever. Fluke city.
