Orlando Magic slow down Toronto Raptors in 104-96 win

11/23/09 | by Zach McCann [mail] | Categories: Recaps

For the second time in three weeks, the Orlando Magic contained the Raptors’ top-rated offense and won a Sunday afternoon game in Canada 104-96.

Amidst a sea of boos, Vince Carter led the Magic with 24 points. JJ Redick added 19, and Dwight Howard posted 17 and 12 after facing some early foul trouble.

  • Three seconds

    1. With Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis battling foul trouble, the Magic dominated the backcourt. Carter led the team in scoring on 9-of-24 shooting, making him 19-of-53 (35.8 percent) over the last two games. But on Sunday, he didn’t play poorly in the least. A lot of those missed shots were near the basket (including two missed dunks in traffic), and he played smart, sound basketball — especially in the second half when, after absorbing a lot of contact without whistles early on, he began chipping away at the Raptors from the outside. Carter carried the Magic when it counted, but he wasn’t the Magic’s best player on Sunday. That honor belongs to…

    2. JJ Redick likes to play in Canada, apparently. Stan Van Gundy couldn’t keep Redick off the floor, logging him 30 minutes after he played a sparse 5 minutes against Boston on Friday. But Redick earned it, registering 19 points and five assists on 6-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Three weeks ago, when Redick started in place of the injured Carter, he scored 27 points to lead the Magic to a victory. Perhaps Bryan Colangelo should look into acquiring Redick when he’s a free agent this summer — clearly, there is something about the Canada air that Redick enjoys (either that, or rookie guard DeMar Derozan is not yet a good NBA defender).

    3. Amazingly, the Magic had zero blocks, but they did a nice job contesting Toronto’s jump-shooters. The Magic held the Raptors to a 105 offensive rating, a noble feat considering the Raptors came into the game with a league-best 115.2 rating. Orlando did an excellent job rotating and communicating on defense, and Howard and Gortat’s defense of Bosh — a guy who ordinarily torches the Magic — should be commended. If it wasn’t for some particularly outstanding play from Amir Johnson (14 points, 8 rebounds in 29 minutes), this one could’ve been ugly.

  • What to like

Jason Williams continued his admirable job replacing Jameer Nelson, scoring 16 points with zero turnovers. Against the slightly slow-footed Jose Calderon, Williams grew more assertive on offense and took Calderon to the whole several times. Williams has been letting Orlando’s high-profile playmakers do the heavy lifting the past couple games, but on Sunday we saw him take advantage of a favorable matchup — just what you’d expect out of a smart, heady player.

After winning five straight, the Magic are now 11-3 and tied for the NBA’s best record — with everything that’s gone wrong, take a minute to appreciate that. A win over Miami on Wednesday and Atlanta on Thursday will mean the Magic are the league’s top squad.

It’s disconcerting to see Howard play below his standard as he has this season, but the Magic are winning despite his troubles, and that’s great.

  • What not to like

Howard’s consistent foul trouble is getting ridiculous, and that same thing was said like three games ago. It’s clear that teams are going after him early on — not that that’s anything new — and that ticky tack first or second foul is coming back to haunt him repeatedly. I don’t know the answer or solution to this problem; he’s already shying away from offenders to avoid fouls (he’s averaging 1.2 blocks less than last season). But I think we all hope it stops.

And the way Amir Johnson controlled the paint for a stretch in the second half — against Howard and Gortat — wasn’t good. They were having trouble boxing out Johnson, as he maneuvered to the glass for an easy offensive putback on more than one occasion.

  • Magic number: Orlando’s two biggest free agents from this summer barely played on Sunday. Matt Barnes saw only 3 minutes of floor time — undoubtedly because of Redick’s strong play — while Brandon Bass didn’t play at all.

NOTE: Got a couple emails saying I was stealing "Behind the box score" from Kelly Dwyer at Ball Don't Lie. Dwyer is one of my favorite NBA writers, and I know he uses the term for his incredibly comprehensive recaps - however, I didn't realize the term was a brand name for BDL, since it's hardly a term that's only used at BDL (in fact, the Orlando local paper has used the term as a feature in its football section). But out of respect for KD and BDL, that term will be no more here.

  • Magic’s best: Redick, who came off the bench to pour in 19 points and become Orlando’s most productive player on the day.

  • Magic’s worst: He didn’t play poorly, but Rashard Lewis went 0-for-6 from deep and only saw the floor for 28 minutes because of foul trouble. He finished with 11 points.

  • Up next: The Magic play four games in five nights beginning with a home tilt against Miami on Wednesday. The next three games over that stretch are on the road.

First, a positive for Dwight, his passing out of the post (at least at times) has been quick(er) and sharp(er) compared to previous seasons.

Second, this was a road win where the Magic went shot flat and trailed in the 1Q, but put the game away in the 4Q. Nice to see them able to play from behind to get the win.

This game was a Great Victory Morally for players Like JJ redick , he boosts his confidence with games like these , as the season wears on we will need players like him in the stretch against teams like atlanta , cavs, and celtics. I still feel like we have the most depth on a our bench we just havent really found a way to utilize it effectively but overall once again good win magic keep it moving against the heat !

It wasn't DeRozan's fault that Redick kept getting open - the rook didn't share much floor time with him. It is a bit maddening, though, that the Raptors haven't got it yet. He's only shooting wide open shots. All they have to do is have someone stick with him.

Great win on the road. I think that bass is going to be a key part of our season and that SVG needs to find time for him. he brings toughness to the offensive boards. But I cannot take away from Ryan Anderson. Tough Test with Miami and Atl. back to back. But I think we will be okay. Go Magic

I'm telling you, we need (in at least some games given certain match ups) Bass needs to be coming off the bench backing up Howard instead of Gortat.

Bass is a 4 yes, but not here. Not in this offense. He is like a mini Dwight Howard in this offense, and has an offensive game way ahead of Gortat. Give him floor minutes and his defense will shine too.

WElls see that's the thing Ryan Anderson out worked him this offseason and found a 3pt shot. That's why anderson got such a great boost of time this season , i dont think he played at all last year for NJN. I agree Bass will be a force based on the team match ups, but if Bass is the 5 do you really expect him to battle with 7 footers on the blocks? i dont know if i like that favor to be honest.
    11/24/09 @ 07:24
    Comment from: Billy [Visitor]
If Bass is the 5, then the Magic have absolutely zero paint protection defensively. Van Gundy's not going to allow that unless he has to (i.e. playing a team that is trying to spread the floor with all 5 guys, or Gortat and Dwight both in foul trouble).

Also, Ryan could shoot the 3 last year. He shot 36.5% from long range while taking nearly 3 a game in his 20 minutes/game (better percentage than Hedo). He's certainly shooting it better this year, but he's had a year to work on his game and he's also getting those shots in a better rhythm and wide open since it's such an important part of the Magic's offense.
    11/24/09 @ 08:54
    Comment from: alex [Visitor]
Lets remember billy and dallas. I know that Bass at the 5 is not what we want but wht about for only 10 minutes. Hes strong enough to hold is own ground and on the offensive side we dont lose anything but actually gain something. Im just saying that we have to try to get him involved.
    11/24/09 @ 18:43
Comment from: Dallas [Visitor] · http://facebook.com
Oh i agree he needs to get involved but i mean when you play a boston team that dwight howard struggles to get rebounds against how can you expect a bass to come in and get rebounds? i mean they do need to find a way to get him incorporated in the game i would lke to see him do well with our team but at the 5 with ryan anderson at 4 i dont think we will get a offensive rebound against a Celtic team or even a Cavs team. He's a great hustle player that has to be in with dwight then he can make those hustle plays. But i understand your point

From watching the Magic thus far, it looks like Bass will be used as a spark off the bench. His offense is really consistant, plus he spreads the floor nicely for a big man with his 18 ft jump shot range. If the Magic go into a shooting slump, look for Bass to come in and right the ship. Nice win streak, keep it going thru the holiday weekend.

I just wanted to comment on how well we have been doing with out our starting point guard consider this we piratically dominant a full strength Boston team, never trailing i believe and then although through our back to back stretch over the holiday weekend we drop a game to miami that we lost and they did not win (Williams free-throws) j-will hopefully shook off the last of that year layoff rust with those two free throw misses. Due to that heartbreaking loss Vince's shot goes unnoticed, when he goes and an does exactly what we've asked of him. Then to go to Atlanta next day and beat team atop of the power rankings at the moment is a big win. The point is sometimes its been rough between injuries and suspensions for the start of the season but if our current results are any indication of things to come we have alot to look forward to
