Three Thoughts after Magic's 123-117 Win over Hornets

02/08/10 | by Philip Rossman-Reich [mail] | Categories: Recaps, Analysis

Vince-Sanity!
Just to recap, Vince Carter sucked in January. He has been good in February.

No, he has been G-O-O-D in February.

A night after leading Orlando with 20 points and helping the team erase a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit for a critical win at Boston, Carter had "one of those nights."

By one of those nights, I mean he helped the Magic erase a 17-point deficit in the third quarter and a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter by scoring a season-high 48 points (three of his career high), 34 in the second half, on 19-of-27 shooting, 6-of-10 3-point shooting and seven rebounds.

Those numbers pretty much speak for themselves as Carter took over in the fourth quarter to lead the Magic back. Orlando outscored New Orleans 36-23 in the fourth quarter, finally clamping down with some defense to secure the win.

But I think it is safe to say this is the effort everyone expected from Carter from time to time. Stan Van Gundy said after the second game of the season in New Jersey, that it looked like Carter was getting ready to have one of the nights he dreaded as an opposing coach. Carter, remember, scored 16 points on six-of-eight shooting in 14:43 before leaving with a sprained ankle in the second quarter.

February has been like a new day for Carter. His abysmal January seems to be far behind him as Carter has looked refreshed and rejuvenated offensively through four games in February. He has scored more than 20 points in three of the four games in February. Carter did not score 48 points in the last four games of January (and he only got to 50 points in the last five games). That is the kind of sudden transformation that has happened.

Something has clicked with Carter.

And if anything, this is a message that Orlando now has this kind of scoring capability from a single player -- something the team has lacked since Tracy McGrady left. Don't forget, Dwight Howard added 25 points and 12 rebounds and the Magic scored 123 points. Just food for thought for the rest of the NBA.

Follow up:

Defense Wins?
Yesterday, I wrote how Orlando impressed with its defense against a good Boston team. Hard to see this kind of defensive effort coming against a New Orleans team without Chris Paul.

The Magic gave up a season-high 70 points in the first half, 117 total points, 51.7 percent shooting and 9-of-18 shooting from beyond the arc.

Darren Collison did a good job initiating the offense. The rookie had a career high 27 points to go with his nine assists. Peja Stojakovic had a season high with 29 points and David West also had 27.

Obviously the defense did a much better job in the second half, holding the Hornets to "only" 47 points.

The defense was pretty bad though as New Orleans built its lead. Lots of getting out of the way and lazy fouls as the Hornets attacked the paint and made the Magic's defense really rotate and get out of position. Orlando struggled to match up with West in the first half -- just take a look at Brandon Bass' -13 +/- rating, a lot of it coming during the second quarter.

And again, the point guard position was a struggle for Jameer Nelson and Jason Williams to contain.

To Orlando's credit, the team did a very good job responding offensively. The Magic shot 54.2 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Hornets 41-33.

A word of caution though. Howard, Carter and Rashard Lewis combined for 91 of Orlando's 123 points. New Orleans got 83 points from its top three guys.

The Fickle Bench
If you read through the links from this afternoon, you may have come across a little item concerning Orlando's bench. Yes, the Magic have an absolutely stacked team where either Ryan Anderson (who got his first DNP since Jan. 8 against Washington... this might just become a monthly thing) or Brandon Bass does not play. But one thing they lack is a reliable post option or scorer off the bench.

In essence the feast or famine sentiment coming from Orlando's bench is because they have too many jump shooters and really no one to initiate the offense or get inside the paint.

Bass got his opportunity tonight as Anderson sat out. He scored four points in about 10 minutes of action, but still struggled defensively, the main thing keeping him off the court.

Jason Williams, who always does a good job picking up the tempo and often has his most effective play while with the starters, scored nine points on 3-of-7 shooting.

Overall the bench had 23 points on 42.9 percent shooting. Good numbers, but not great.

The bench has had games like these and then they have had fantastic games too. Tonight though, it was clear Orlando was relying on its starters. Stan Van Gundy has always been someone who does not mind playing his starters big minutes. But it is also clear, the Magic need a little more consistent production from the bench to make sure they are not digging themselves out of a halftime hole.

No. Just stop it. Bass did not get his "opportunity" tonight. Of course he put up the numbers that he did tonight; the man hasn't played in like half a year. It's becoming almost comical the way he's being dismissed. Give Bass 3 consecutive games of 12-15 minutes off the bench, and you will see an increase in production and stats from game to game guaranteed.

"But it is also clear, the Magic need a little more consistent production from the bench to make sure they are not digging themselves out of a halftime hole."

Again, Stan's fault. Maybe a better rotation/substitution pattern would be in order. Who cares that Bass doesn't shoot the 3 playing the 4? What he is capable of is what Reshard and Anderson will never be; a mini Dwight down low. Give the man an opportunity.

With the way the team plays, Anderson is a much better fit.. Unfortunately, bass does not fit in the rotation against most teams. He is a good player, but Anderson is more valuable to magic.. Id rather work to devlop and use 21 yr old anderson(big upside to his game) then use the older bass who does not have as much upside... The only alternative to get bass more minutes is to play him at backup center but id rather have gortat do that

Dont single out Bass on a night where Peja who was guarded by barnes, David West past allstar and collison had huge nights, and everyone on the magic struggled defensively.

The hornets could not miss for stretches of the game, Anderson has struggled the last 5 games, give bass a chance for a few.

Bass does not deserve playing time for the same reason that JJ couldn't play a few years ago: he is AWFUL on defense. I mean really, really bad. On 7 out of 10 consecutive possessions in the second quarter the Hornets scored because of Bass: 4 times he rotated incorrectly, twice he was out of position, and once he got taken easily one-on-one by David West. He is no mini-Dwight.

@ Ryan,

Some of those miscues might have a little bit to do with the fact the dude sits DNP like for 8 game stretches at a time. Let's be real.

And to James: The "older" Bass?? Yes of course older than 21, but they guy is barely 25 for goodness sake.

He has WAY more upside than Ryan Anderson, who hit a couple of 3s in the preseason, Novemeber and December, and all of a sudden he's the white Reshard Lewis amongst Magic fans. I'd still take Courtney Lee over him.

And it's true, Bass is not exactly a perfect fit for this system, but hell, Otis and Stan maybe should have addressed that "issue" before signing him to millions of dollars.

We got him. He's a good to great player. Play him. Too bad we wont though, and he'll be gone next year and go out and be as successful in the league as Ben Wallace was after leaving us.

Yes Bass's defensive rotation was horrible last night, but for a guy that has been put into games as inconsistently as he has it's pretty much expected. He's not a robot and good defensive rotation comes with court time. Yes you can learn this through practice, but when you're actually in a game time situation things are completely different.

Look at the magic defensively at the beginning of the season, and compare it to now (minus last night's game). Its almost night and day, because most of players have become acclimated with each other and have consistent roles. Bass has not been afforded this opportunity because his skill set is not of value to this team.

"because his skill set is not of value to this team. "

Which is sad and borderline nauseating. He's been such a class act about it too. I feel sorry for this superstar in waiting!

Bass doesn't play because he can't remember the defensive set. Its that simple. If he want more burn remember the plays.

Yeah, give Bass some slack. This guy hasn't been giving the oppurtunity to play all because he doesn't fit into Stan's system. Well, you know what, Why did we sign this guy? This is Stan VanGrumpy's fault. Give Brandon sometime and you'll see improvement. We have to many jump shooters and not enough rebounders. We'r not going to win a championship with the current system. I have to say it, but look how were getting out hustled on the boards everynight. We need a big physical presence down low with Howard. Bass is a clean up guy and a damn good offensive rebounder. We only won the game last night because of dribble penatration and being physical. We must learn how to play defense. Stan Van Grundy better hurry up and figure out how were going to defend Cleveland and L.A if we want the crown. What does those two teams have that hurt us last year. BIGS who can score and rebound. G0 MAGIC!!!
02/09/10 @ 14:24
Comment from: ... [Visitor]
I agree Bass should play more, i just dont understand Stan's logic. If you play the more physical bigger teams who defend the three well, like LA, Clev, Boston then Bass should play cause he can give you defense and really those teams close out the 3 point line well so why is anderson in there? He has alot of game but he's primary a 3 point shooter and Stan has to learn some nights you cant have that many shooters out there. Meanwhile when you play teams that are not that physical and that give away the 3 Anderson should be playing.

Btw how come no one is talking about VC? What an unbelievable game, inside and out he single handely brought them back. I mean 48 points shooting just 4 free throws is unheard. Most people say VC is done, no the guy still has alot of game in him. If he was playing for the nets still he would be avg. 20 + but this team he doesnt need to. I know its one game but the first four games of this month, VC is more aggresive better shot selection, i think the injuries really took a toll on his confidence. So this is pretty exciting!

magic needs vince. Period. he will dominate in the playoffs coz he has so many talent around him, and hes a playmaker. He scored 48 coz everyone was staying home on the shooters. He will be impossible to stop in a seven game series

All I can say is wow....Glad I was there to see Vince light it up. The excitment in the arena was thick and I think we all were hoping that he would score 50. That was a fun game.

Giving up 70 first half points was not a good sign that this team can play strong defense night after night and I agree that our bench needs to be consistant more often.

My take on Mr. Bass is that although I like him asa player, I do not think we have a place for him due to our style of play. I like his hustle, his heart, and his ability to mix it up in the paint but lets face it, Ryan anderson has better size, more range, and I think he plays a better brand of "Magic Basketball" than does Bass.

Remember the pre season when every writter said Bass would start because that would make us a more 'traditional' type of basketball team? Well guess what? We are not the prototypical NBA team....We are the Orlando Magic. And the Orlando Magic style of basketball is feedimg Dwight in the paint and kicking the ball out to a host of shooters if you dare to double dwight. Bass does not fit that scheme.

Bass has his place and unfortunatly for him that place is on the bench as an insurance policy incase players get hurt. Simply put...we have better players than Brandon that fit how we play.

Two big road games coming up....Man I hope we beat the Cavs!
02/10/10 @ 05:31
Comment from: Tom [Visitor]
While I agree that bass doesn't fit the usual tactics of magics brand of basketball, would it make sense if we play bass alongside gortat when dwight gets in some foul trouble or is taking a rest? I think that it would bulk us up on the inside a lot which is something we need without howard.
02/10/10 @ 09:54
Comment from: e-moe [Visitor]
vc is the man and always will be but i think we need a better shot selection i think vince needs more minutes they say its dwights team i think its both vince and dwights team cause they are the top players and if it wasnt for vince then they would have lost these last couple of games we need another star we need mcgrady to that will be a sure championship come to orlando mcgrady......lineup: dwight, carter, mcgrady, nelson, lewis...........damn
