According to RealGM, Otis Smith told Portland's Kevin Pritchard that the team "caught a break" when Turkoglu backed out of a deal with the Blazers to sign with the Raptors and that Portland "wasn't missing out on anything." I have two reactions to this story, the first is whether or not I actually believe it. There are no credited sources, and we're basically relying on a person who heard the story, told a person who told a person who told us. On the other hand, Otis' actions pretty much back up the story. He didn't seem too concerned when Turkoglu left, and it was clear that the Magic weren't going to overpay to keep him. As someone who covers the Magic but is also a Portland fan, I honestly have to a agree with him. It became pretty obvious that Hedo cared all about who could give him the most money, not who could give him the best chance at winning. I know it might be salt in the wound and this story is a little old, but news is scarce right now. What do you think? Did Otis let Hedo walk because of money or because he thinks he's on the downside of his career? For those of you who questioned Orlando's willingness to let Hedo Turkoglu leave via free agency, an interesting report came out this week.
