Orlando Magic prepare offer for C.J. Watson

The Orlando Magic plan to sign point guard C.J. Watson to an offer sheet for the remainder of the mid-level exception, sources have confirmed. Watson, who averaged 9.5 points and 2.7 assists last season with Golden State, is a restricted free agent and the Warriors will have seven days to match the offer. Golden State is pretty crowded in the backcourt - including first-round pick Stephen Curry - but it's unclear whether the Warriors are likely to match the offer at this point. Before spending the last two seasons with Golden State, Watson played overseas and in the D-League. He joins Anthony Johnson as a backup to Jameer Nelson, and it's expected that Watson would see the primary reserve minutes. Watson isn't a pass-first point guard - he's a guy who can get into the lane with his exceptional quickness, and he can shoot the ball well (career 39 percent from 3-point range). I don't think there's much question that Watson provides an upgrade over Johnson. And it's worth noting that Watson scored 38 points and made 16-of-16 free throws against the Utah Jazz on April 11.
