Believe it or not, we are less than one month away from the first Magic preseason game. Orlando will open training camp on October 1 and open the preseason in Mexico City against New Orleans on October 7. So how will we get ready? By counting down to the beginning of the season on November 2 against Denver. Let's continue:
OK, so talking about Otis Smith is not the happiest of subjects for Magic fans right now.
He is (somewhat rightfully... OK, completely rightfully) blamed for putting the Magic in the hole that forced them to trade Dwight Howard and put the team in a massive hole that will take a few years to dig out of.
Otis Smith is not the most popular guy.
But he is a major part of the Magic. A member of our family. So today will be Otis Smith's day.
First, Otis is being inducted into the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Court of Legends along with Florida and ABA legend Artis Gilmore. Smith is a Florida basketball legend. He went to Forrest High School in Jacksonville and decided to stay home at Jacksonville University. He spent three seasons with the Magic, including the inaugural season in Orlando. He was one of the team's top performers on that original team. That is something a lot of people tend to forget.
He was an incredibly athletic player and had a pretty bright future with the Magic until injuries derailed his career.
And his record as a general manager was actually pretty good. The Rashard Lewis signing aside, he built a championship team and build the most successful run in Magic history. He should have a place in Magic history, even if it ultimately has an unhappy ending.
So with 51 days remaining until the season, here is a reminder of what Otis Smith could do on the basketball court ... also former Magic players Shawn Kemp and Dee Brown:
